School Students Sailing On Spirit Of Bermuda
The Spirit of Bermuda set sail this morning on its first middle school voyage for the school year 2022 – 2023.
A spokesperson said, “Three-masted schooner and sail training vessel, the Spirit of Bermuda set sail this morning on its first middle school voyage for the school year 2022 – 2023. It marks a return to the Bermuda Sloop Foundation’s regular residential 5-day/4-night expeditions since the Covid pandemic first began.
“These experiential development programs for all Bermuda public and private middle schools feature the following components:
- Structured Experiential Learning Model – an effective alternative form of learning for students to help improve classroom learning
- Curriculum alignment with Cambridge Curriculum and STEM Education Model – this reinforces learning and chances of academic success in the classroom
Robin Hamill, CEO of the Foundation, said of the voyage: “We are very happy to be able to begin our overnight youth development programs again for this school year. Our experiential learning voyages offer structured learning through sail training which combines core life and education skills that compliment in-school instructional learning with real world experience.”
“Sailing on the Spirit is a wonderful, empowering experience for students. By providing unique experiences which are challenging and meaningful, our young people can develop important non-cognitive skills such as grit, resilience, optimism, and self-regulation that help them succeed in life.”
The spokesperson said, “He went on to say that many past students were so influenced by their experiences on the Spirit of Bermuda, they went on to pursue careers in the maritime industry.
“During Covid-19, the Sloop Foundation ran one-day educational programs aboard The Spirit of Bermuda for middle school students [ages 12 – 14]. The 2021 – 2022 program included 213 public school children and 94 private school students.”
