Netball: BNA Weekend Match Results
The 2022-2023 Winter League netball season got underway at Bernard Park this past weekend, with Storm becoming the Sylvia Eastley Tournament Champions.
A spokesperson said, “Bernard Park returned to action this past Saturday for the first time this 2022-2023 Winter League Season after opening day had to be moved to Bermuda College due to the inclement weather.
“As a result, only the team walk by, the 11&U and 14&U Harold ‘Doc’ Dowling Tournaments [Winner Phoenix Embers], and three rounds of the 17&U Harold ‘Doc’ Dowling Tournament were able to take place, forcing the 17&U and Senior Sylvia Eastley Tournament to be completed this past Saturday.
“The excitement of netball returning with a sense of normalcy is definitely in the air, as spectators could be seen in the stands in addition to lining the perimeter fence of the Bernard Park netball courts.
“With the completion of the 11&U and 14&U Opening Day Tournaments, these divisions started the day with league play:
11&U Division
Storm vs. Phonix Sparks
NVCC vs. NPS Hotsteppers
14&U Division
Storm vs. Rangers
Phoenix Embers vs. NVCC
“Following the league play of the 11&U and 14&U Divisions the 17&U and Seniors completed their Tournaments [Note Storm won both the 17&U and Senior Tournaments]:
17&U Harold ‘Doc’ Dowling Tournament
“These up-and-coming netballers showed they are the future of netball displaying great skill and passion, with many matches showing great levels of competitiveness. Storm was crowned the Champions after going undefeated.
Senior Sylvia Eastley Tournament
“The 17&U set the stage for what would be a mouthwatering event of Senior netball.
- Match 1 – would see NVCC [1] vs. Phoenix Heat [7], were Phoenix Heat showed their dominance as the team to beat.
- Match 2 – Saw Storm defeat Docksiders 5 to 1.
- Match 3 – With Storm playing back-to-back matches, giving them the opportunity to warm up they would defeat new comers St. Georges 10 to 1.
- Match 4 – Was heavily contested with Lindos Tigers and Phoenix Heat in a ping pong match with Phoenix edging Tigers 8 to 6.
- Match 5 – NVCC showed they have come to play this season out scoring Docksiders 12 to 4.
- Match 6 – Saw the first upset of the season with Storm dominating the match from start to finish defeating Phoenix Heat the 2021 – 2022 League Champions by a score of 11 to 5.
- Match 7 – NVCC continued their dominance outscoring St. Georges 7 to 2
- Match 8 – Tigers lost to NVCC 4 to 6
- Match 9 – NVCC took on Phoenix Heat, beating the 7 to 5 to seal their spot in the finals
- Match 10 Finals – The final match of the day came down to who wanted it the most, with NVCC digging deep in hope of being crowned champions, but Storm was having none of that, protecting all their center passes and possession of the ball to become the Sylvia Eastley Tournament Champions and having done it by going undefeated.”
