In preparation for their zero waste badges, the First Devonshire Brownies have been “conserving water at home and becoming more aware of food packaging and accumulation of waste in their own lives.”

A spokesperson said, “They are monitoring their usage of single use plastics and studying the subsequent impact of plastics in the ocean, resulting in the death of marine life.

“Brownies were treated to a presentation on the impact of litter on the land and in the oceans by a KBB Education Officer at one of their Brownie meetings; they actually saw and examined litter that was washed up on Bermuda’s shores from far away countries.

“They have used throw aways like egg cartons and paper towel rolls to design caterpillars and butterflies for centerpieces for the dinner table and toys for tots. They have observed their habits of waste in the home, taking note of how much waste they accumulate and throw away on a daily basis, how much plastic they use, and how to increase usage of water bottles.

“They have investigated the storage of throwaways by recently going on a walk on Woodbourne Avenue, where they observed pristine entrances and sidewalks on and near the properties of the Bermuda Security Ltd, Hope Healthcare, Once Upon a Time Nurseries, Woodbourne Chemist, CHUBB Insurance Company, and Oxford Guest House, most facilitated by large garbage bins.

“The culmination of the zero waste study will be a Red Carpet Hat Show and Tea scheduled for Wednesday, November 23 at 5.00pm at the Guide Headquarters Lady Asser Hut off Richmond Road.

“These darling diva hats were created by the Brownies using throw away materials such as used fabric softener sheets, bottle caps plastic containers, patches and strips of cloth from unwanted clothing, buttons, waste paper, used tin foil, cereal boxes, and gift bags.

“These hats will be showcased on Facebook in a silent auction during the first week of December 2022; highest bidders will win the hats.

“Pledges in the form of bids can be deposited in the Girl Guide account with the name Devonshire Brownie Hats written next to the deposit. Details will follow on Facebook.

“Funds raised will supplement the cost of crafts, badges from the UK, transportation to field trips such as local farms, museums, old time picnics with root beer carried in mayonnaise bottles insulated with newspaper, sewing badge items, and cooking supplies and the making of corn husk dolls and holiday ornaments with Ronnie Chameau and friends at Carter House. They will also need to fund an upcoming Klondike Camp at Darrell’s Island.

“Guiding is over 100-years-old in Bermuda and is in desperate need of additional committed leaders who enjoy working with youth.

“Several current leaders have been nurturing girls in Guiding for decades. There is a need to reopen groups which have closed, thus a need for adult volunteers. Interested persons can direct interest to girlguiding.bm.

“Leaders of First Devonshire Brownies are Brown Owl Cathy Bassett, 40 year veteran of Brownie Guiding, Island Commissioner Roslyn [Wally] Simmons and Tawny Owl Danica Bascome, Education Therapist with Bermuda Public Schools and Executive Director of Marvelous Morals.”
