Please Keep Elbow Beach Clean On Christmas

December 22, 2022

“Everyone is encouraged to “act responsibly and remember to reduce, reuse and recycle to help minimise the amount of waste generated by this event” at the Christmas Day celebrations at Elbow Beach.

A spokesperson said, “Christmas Day at Elbow Beach, which is organized by the community, has become a family-friendly tradition for many locals, expats and visitors. The celebration encourages a mixing of cultures and holiday traditions in a safe, fun and friendly environment.

“KBB is not directly involved with the Christmas Day festivities, but over the years, KBB has assisted with the event’s waste management efforts. The Department of Parks and Waste Management, in collaboration with KBB, provide trash and recycling bins and bags for the Christmas Day event. KBB also coordinates a post-event clean-up on Boxing Day, which requires dozens of volunteers typically removes over one tonne [2,200+ pounds] of trash and recyclables from the beach.

“On Christmas Day, the Coral Beach & Tennis Club will allow parking at the Horizons and Cottages property. Volunteers will provide help with organising the parking and donations are welcome, all of which will go to support local charitable causes. Community partners who help to support the event also include St. Paul’s Anglican Church and the Bermuda Police Service.”

A spokesperson for KBB stated, “We appreciate the efforts of all involved with the annual Boxing Day clean-up at Elbow Beach. Christmas Day revelers typically show a lot of respect for the beach and do their part to help keep Bermuda beautiful. The potential for littering is significantly reduced when beach-goers make an effort to reduce, reuse and recycle. It also helps when plenty of bins are provided.”

The spokesperson said, “Everyone is encouraged to act responsibly and remember to reduce, reuse and recycle to help minimise the amount of waste generated by this event. The Parks Department, Waste Management, and KBB volunteers will place dozens of extra trash and recycling bins on the beach.

“The public is encouraged to please use the bins properly and remember that only TAG [tin, aluminium and glass] go in the blue recycling bins. All other waste, including paper and plastic products, goes in the red trash bins. You may also wish to take your personal waste home to avoid the risk of it potentially blowing across the beach.

“Visit www.KBB.bm or call 799-5142 and register to volunteer for the Boxing Day clean-up on Monday, December 26th from 10am – 12pm. The more, the merrier, and we thank you in advance for all that you do to help Keep Bermuda Beautiful!”

Why do we even need to have volunteers come and clean up after the event? or any event?!! ALL THOSE ATTENDING LEAVE THE BEACH AS YOU FIND IT and take your trash home with you. It boggles the mind how you make so much effort to attend – the costumes the food the drinks the games…yet you can’t make one bit if effort to clean up after yourselves…..just take a trash bag with you, fill it up with YOUR OWN trash and take it home!….lazy, selfish, entitlement… someone else will clean up after you….how about you show a little respect and clean up after yourselves. The rest of us would really appreciate it thank you.

I don’t recall you saying the same thing about Cup Match campers, who leave mountains of trash, discarded tents, old used bbq grills, etc, on beaches and parks for others to pick up.

Read….I said this event or any event…if the shoe fits then I am taking to you …I don’t care what event it is…the message is pick up after yourself!!!

  3. Clean up or be fined! says:

I don’t get it. If you have a party clean up after yourself. There should not be one scrap of trash left after this event. It is a public beach, fine each and every culprit who leaves a mess!!
