KBB: Please Minimise Waste At Christmas Event

December 24, 2023 | 1 Comment

Keep Bermuda Beautiful [KBB] has encouraged the community to “act responsibly and help minimise the amount of waste” on Christmas Day at Elbow Beach.

A KBB spokesperson said, “Christmas Day at Elbow Beach has become a family-friendly tradition for many residents of Bermuda and visitors. The celebration is organized by the community and provides a safe, fun and friendly environment to welcome a variety of cultures and holiday traditions.

“KBB is not directly involved with the Christmas Day festivities, but over the years, KBB has assisted with the event’s waste management efforts. The Department of Parks and Waste Management, in collaboration with KBB, provide trash and recycling bins and bags for the Christmas Day event. KBB also coordinates a post-event clean-up on Boxing Day, which requires dozens of volunteers and typically removes more than one tonne [2,200+ pounds] of trash and recyclables from the beach.

A look at last year

“Parking for beachgoers on Christmas Day will be behind the pickleball courts at the Horizons and Cottages property. Parking is provided at no cost by the Coral Beach & Tennis Club. However, volunteers will be on site to assist with parking in an organized manner and donations are welcome, all of which will go to support local charitable causes.”

“We thank the volunteers and everyone involved with the Christmas Eve set-up of bins and Boxing Day clean-up at Elbow Beach. Revelers who attend this annual Christmas Day event typically do their part and use the appropriate bins provided to responsibly dispose of trash and recyclables. The potential for littering is significantly reduced when beachgoers do their part to reduce, reuse and recycle. It is great when we see the community working together to keep Bermuda beautiful and it helps to have plenty of bins on the beach for easy disposal and separation of trash from TAG recyclables [tin, aluminium and glass].”

The spokesperson said, “The public is encouraged to act responsibly and help minimise the amount of waste produced by this event by practicing the 3Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle. Dozens of extra trash and recycling bins will be placed on Elbow Beach on Christmas Eve, this Sunday afternoon December 24th.

“The public is encouraged to reduce the amount of disposable items being brought to the beach and use reusable products as best as possible. Please make every effort to use the bins properly and remember that only TAG materials [tin, aluminium and glass] go in the blue recycling bins. All other waste, including paper and plastic products, goes in the red trash bins. You may also wish to take your personal waste home to avoid the risk of it potentially blowing across the beach.

“The Boxing Day clean-up involving the Department of Waste Management, Parks Department, Wilmot’s Trucking and KBB volunteers will be held from 10am – 12pm on Boxing Day, Tuesday, December 26th. Please visit www.KBB.bm for volunteer sign-up and thank you in advance for all that you do to keep Bermuda beautiful!”
