BCHC Mammography Earns Re-Accreditation
Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s mammography services have been re-accredited by the Canadian Association of Radiologists Mammography Accreditation Program [CAR-MAP], “confirming its high-quality screening and diagnostic mammograms delivery to Bermuda’s men and women.”
A spokesperson said, “As the first facility in Bermuda to offer digital mammography in 2008 and introduce 3D technology in 2017, Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre has long been the leading mammography provider in Bermuda.”
“We can assure our patients receiving mammography that our services meet strict international standards”, states Dr Paul Risk, radiologist and breast specialist in the diagnostic imaging department at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre. “We are committed to maintaining this level of excellence on an ongoing basis, so when the American College of Radiology [ACR] advised they were no longer accrediting facilities outside the USA, we were able to quickly pivot to using the CAR-MAP.”
The spokesperson said, “The rigorous process of this voluntary programme ensures that the Centre’s mammogram images meet the highest standards. It also provides the Centre with peer review and evaluation of staff qualifications, equipment performance, quality control and quality assurance programmes and dose and imaging quality control.
“Mammography remains the gold standard screening technique and offers an effective means to detect breast cancer early. It is noninvasive, relatively inexpensive, and currently, in Bermuda, it is recommended that women at average risk begin having mammograms at age 40.
“Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre provides a breast pathway that includes free ‘Know Your Lemons’ breast health presentations and an accredited mammography service utilising two state-of-the-art mammography machines for screening and diagnostic mammograms. Should an abnormality be found, breast ultrasound and/or ultrasound-guided & stereotactic biopsy procedures can be scheduled within days, and Dr Risk is able to provide in-person consultations for diagnostic patients.
“The Centre provides free onsite parking, extended appointment hours and a $0 co-pay thanks to the Centre’s Equal Access Fund, supported by corporate and community donations, which ensures that everyone who needs diagnostic imaging or radiation treatment has access regardless of whether a patient has health insurance.
