Multiple Vehicle Collision In Southampton

[Updated] Two people were injured in a multiple vehicle collision in Southampton late last night, the police have confirmed.

A police spokesperson said, “Around 11:45 p.m. on Sunday, 29th January, 2023, police received several 911 calls reporting a serious multiple vehicle collision on South Shore Road, Southampton, just east of the Henry the VIII restaurant.

“Upon arrival, officers observed three motorcycles and a motorcar were involved. Details are limited, but it appears a male motorcycle rider attempted to overtake a motorcar headed east on South Shore Road, when he collided with two bikes travelling in the opposite direction.

“The male motorcyclist who attempted to overtake the motorcar is described as a heavyset, dark skinned male, sustained serious injuries in the collision.

“He was unresponsive and was transported by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment. One of the other motorcycle riders, also a male, suffered minor injuries.

“It remains unknown whether the third motorcyclist also believed to be a male was injured, as they were driven away from the scene by someone on another bike not thought to have been involved in the collision. The female motorcar driver did not sustain any injuries.

“Traffic was diverted at the junction of Lighthouse Road and at Southampton Princess while Collision Investigators processed the scene.

Update 6.52am: The police said, “The scene of last night’s collision remains closed with traffic being diverted at the junction of South Road and Lighthouse Road, as well as the junction of South Road and the entrance to Southampton Princess Hotel. Traffic delays are to be expected and we apologise for the inconvenience caused as we continue to investigate the serious multi-vehicle collision.”

Update 8.37am: A police spokesperson said, “The roadway has now been reopened.”

Update 1.35pm: The police have confirmed the sad news that a man has died.

A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Police Service can confirm that a 40-year-old male has succumbed to injuries sustained in a multi-vehicle road traffic collision, which occurred around 11:45 p.m. on Sunday 29th January 2023.

“Initial reports indicated the collision involved three motorcycles and a motorcar. The 40-year-old male was riding a motorcycle east on South Road, Southampton, when upon reaching the area of Henry the VIII restaurant, he reportedly attempted to overtake a motorcar travelling in the same direction and collided with three other bikes traveling in a westerly direction.

“Police and other emergency responders arrived on the scene to find the 40-year-old male unresponsive. He was attended to by EMTs and transported by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for further treatment, but was subsequently pronounced dead.

“This marks the first road traffic fatality of 2023.

“One of the motorcycle riders who was headed in the opposite direction sustained a broken arm and was also transported to hospital, where at last check, he was being prepared for surgery. His injury is not considered life threatening.

“It remains unclear whether any of the other two motorcycle riders headed west were injured in the collision, as they rode away from the scene on one of the bikes involved. Traffic was diverted away from the scene which remained closed for an extended period while it was forensically processed. We wish to thank the public for their patience and cooperation during this exercise.
