PrivCom Set To Host Data Privacy Week

January 16, 2023

PrivCom will be hosting Data Privacy Week [DPW] in Bermuda during the week of January 23 to January 27.

A spokesperson said, “PrivCom is pleased to announce that we will be hosting Data Privacy Week in Bermuda during the week of 23-27th January 2023. The initiative has seen fantastic support from a number of public and private entities, both local and international.

“Data Privacy Week is a global initiative, with nations worldwide pausing to raise awareness and empower individuals [from children to older persons] about information privacy, protection and security. The global theme for 2023 is ‘STOP. THINK. CONNECT.’ PrivCom created the local theme, ‘We Hear You’ and has a full week of events to engage with every facet of the community in Bermuda.”

The Assistant Commissioner and Head of Policy and Engagement at PrivCom said, “Establishing balance between the needs of individuals and business innovation is key in data privacy regulation. During DPW 2023, PrivCom is looking forward to hearing more about the needs of individuals and organisations in our community to focus our efforts on designing tools, resources, and guidance materials tailored to specific sectors of our local community and personalised to meet diverse interests of individuals on the island.”

The spokesperson said, “Data Privacy Week events will comprise the following:

“Monday [January 23]: Data Privacy Hour for children – Privacy Hour for Children & Teens. From 10-11am, students from Bermuda’s public, private and home-schools [nursery-age to secondary students] will engage in a range of age-appropriate activities [coloring and naming PrivCom’s turtle mascot to privacy-related stories, games and interactive animation and films] to learn more about digital identities and data privacy, privacy choices to promote digital safety, and sharing information during online interactions with others. Junior and senior level students will participate in a Privacy Hackathon.

“All students can participate in a colouring the PrivCom turtle competition. Local artist, Ms. Cherie Richardson, created two coloring sheets of the turtle – a basic version with privacy-related icons for Nursery to Middle School students and a more intricate version with added design for older students. A selection of entries will be on display via the privacy.bm website.

“Special thanks to the Minister of Education Diallo Rabain for opening remarks for the event, Commissioner Kalmar Richards, their teams and all teachers and public, private, and home schools that are planning to participate. It is not too late to register here.
