IoD Looks At ‘Hot Topics For Boards In 2023′

February 21, 2023

The Institute of Directors [IoD] Bermuda began their 2023 Professional Development programme earlier this month with a panel discussion entitled, Hot Topics for Boards in 2023.

A spokesperson said, “Held in the Trudeau Ballroom at Hamilton Princess, the event was hosted in conjunction with KPMG and was attended by more than 100 people.

“The panel included: The Hon. Minister Jason Hayward, MP, Minister of Economy and Labour; Shanna Lespere, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Bermuda Monetary Authority; Nathan Kowalski, Board Chair, Chamber of Commerce; Will McCallum, Head of Tax, KPMG in Bermuda and; Michelle Cardwell, Board Chair, IoD Bermuda and was moderated by James Berry, CEO, KPMG.”

“This event was a great way to start our year and we are grateful to KPMG for their participation and the high level of panelists for the discussion,” says Michelle Cardwell.

In his opening comments Mr Berry explained that; “Many of the themes of 2022 continue into 2023. Companies need to be ready and prepared to weather current geopolitical and economic challenges while still anticipating long-term global growth.”

The spokesperson said, “Mr Berry also highlighted a recent KPMG CEO survey that indicated that 86 percent of CEOs believe a recession over the next 12 months will happen, but 58 percent feel it will be mild and short and 76 percent have plans in place to deal with it.

“Topics covered by the panel included; current global and local economic considerations facing Boards, competition to attract and maintain talent in today’s marketplace and the importance of managing a business’s approach to ESG – a subject of increasing importance for employees, customers, investors and other stakeholders.”

“The diversity of our panel, with Government and local and international business all represented made for a lively and informative discussion,” says Mrs. Cardwell.

Mr Berry adds “I’d like to thank everyone who attended and was involved in the event, especially our expert panel members. As directors tackle a lengthy and expanding list of must-dos they must also help their companies prepare for the unexpected. Forums such as this provide a valuable opportunity to share perspectives as we navigate a far less predictable business and risk environment and build a stronger future for our businesses and for Bermuda.”

The spokesperson said, “The panel discussion was followed by a 20 minute Q&A and closing remarks from Mr Berry and Ms Danielle Riviere. If you missed this session and wish to explore the topics covered, check out KPMG’s summary of 2023 board and board committee hot topics: On the agenda series [kpmg.us].
