AIJC Alumni Reunion Event Next Month
The inaugural Atlantic International Junior Championship [AIJC] Alumni Reunion event is scheduled for July 11 to July 13 at the Belmont Hills Golf Club and Port Royal Golf Course.
A spokesperson said, “Firstly, a little background. The Atlantic International Junior Championship was started over 40 years ago. Geoff Parker and others spearheaded the tournament’s birth and subsequent operations in Bermuda for many years. Besides local talent, it attracted golfers from the US, Canada, UK, Spain and the Bahamas [several of whom would have professional golf careers such as Dwayne Pearman and Michael Sims of Bermuda, and Cathy Reynolds of the US who is returning for this event.
“The key distinction Mr. Parker had was a vision that the tournament would not only attract top international golfers, which it certainly did, but that the tournament would foster enduring international friendships. This was, and remains, a very unique goal of the AIJC tournament. International bonds formed during the tournament have endured and this reunion celebrates that vision, well fulfilled. Bermuda hospitality, world-class golf courses, and friendship; what more could a reunion ask for?
“The committee [details of which are on the website] formed and initiated online meetings in May 2022 and are now gearing up for the first of what is hoped will be held bi-annually going forward. Many of the overseas participants registered thus far haven’t been to Bermuda for the past 30-40 years, so we are re-introducing many friends back to our beautiful island.
“We will also have many locals participating in this event who played in the AIJC over the years.
“Our event is meant to be fun-filled with various golfing formats being played over the 4 days of events. On Monday, July 10th, 2023 there is a casual round of golf scheduled at Turtle Hill followed by the opening dinner at Divots. The three-day event then moves to Belmont for the opening round on July 11th, followed by Port Royal on July 12th and back to Belmont for the final day on July 13th. The prize giving and dinner is being held at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club.
“In addition to rekindling past memories and battling for bragging rights, participants will be playing for a worthy cause as any proceeds are to go in support of the Bermuda Island Games Association.
“The deadline for alumni registration closes on Jun 30, 2023. For anyone with questions, please submit via our website or you can send an email to either phil.aijc@gmail.com or geoffblee@icloud.com.”
