Bermudian sisters Satya and Dezirae Darrell were among the youngest members of the Bermuda squad at the NatWest International Island Games in Guernsey.
Satya, 16, and Dezirae, 14, represented the island in badminton at the week-long event, which finished on Friday [July 14].
The pair, who attend Somersfield Academy, were born in Bermuda and moved to New Zealand as young children before returning to the island several years ago.
They were encouraged to play badminton by Emma Moran-Lee, a member of the Bermuda team in Guernsey, and physical education teacher and director of activities at Somersfield.
“We went down to BAA [the Bermuda Athletic Association] where there are badminton sessions,” Dezirae told Bernews. “Eventually, we started playing with the Bermuda team.”
Satya believes the pair have greatly benefited from competing in Guernsey and said the Games have whetted their appetite for more international experiences.
“Playing at the Island Games has been fun,” Satya said. “The people have been so friendly. We’ve had some wins and defeats.
“The teams we’ve faced have been tough and challenging. We stuck to it, rooted for our team, and supported everyone.”
Congratulations, well done girls!
