The Bermuda tennis team will return home with three bronze medals after a successful NatWest International Island Games campaign in Guernsey, the Channel Islands.
Shelby Madeiros, in the women’s singles, and Gavin Manders and James Finnigan, in the men’s doubles, won bronze to add to the men’s team’s third-place finish in the team event.
Manders was forced to retire midway through the men’s doubles semi-final against Aland because of injury today.
The 37-year-old, who was playing in his final Island Games, tore a pectoral muscle in their quarter-final win over Gotland yesterday, but decided to try to battle through the pain in the semis.
Playing with a bandaged chest, Manders got through the first set, serving underarm, before retiring when the discomfort become too much.
Manders and Finnigan lost the first set 7-5.
Meanwhile, Madeiros lost 6-0, 6-1 to Natasha Forrest, of Jersey, in the women’s singles semi-finals today.
Manders told Bernews: “We came here to win medals and we’re blessed to be leaving with three of them.”
