62 Students Earn Govt Scholarships & Awards

The Ministry of Education announced that “62 Bermudian students have been awarded Scholarships and Awards totaling just over $1.5 million at the 2023 Bermuda Government Scholarships and Awards reception held on August 10.”

Each year the Ministry of Education provides scholarships and awards to Bermudian students to pursue higher education.

Minister of Education Diallo Rabain said, “Education is not a destination but a lifelong journey, and the Ministry of Education is not just a supporter of academic endeavors but a believer in the dreams of each and every student.”

“We take immense pride in playing a part in the journey of our recipients as we know that they will make significant contributions to our local community and on the global stage.”

“Although we are experiencing challenging economic times, our commitment to our students and their further education is unwavering. We continue to make significant investments, which is reflective of our Scholarships and Awards budget that has increased consistently to the now $1.5 million dollars we see today.”

“Once again, to our 2023 recipients, congratulations, and may your journey ahead be as remarkable as the journey that has brought you to this moment.”

The Government said, “The full listing of scholarships and awards provided are as follows:

“The Bermuda Government Scholarship for graduating school students or current college or university students [aged 16-25] for post-secondary education. This Scholarship has a value of up to $35,000 per year for up to four years towards the cost of tuition and basic accommodation. Our 2023 recipients are:

  • 1. Maya Furbert-Jacobs, a graduate of The Berkeley Institute, where she was a member of the Student Council and Cheerleading Team. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science at St. John’s University, where she has achieved Dean’s List Status. In addition to her studies, Maya is presently signed to the Wilhelmina Modeling Agency in New York.
  • 2. X’achela Robinson, a graduate of The Grier School in Pennsylvania, is pursuing an Honours Bachelor of Science Degree in Biomedical Science at Cardiff Metropolitan University, where she is the student representative for the Biomedical Science Programme and has completed her first year with distinction. In addition to her studies, X’achela is the Founder and President of the Afro-Caribbean Society, a participant in the Cardiff Metropolitan Award Programme, a volunteer with St. John’s Ambulance, and an accomplished dancer. X’achela aspires to become a Doctor of Medicine upon the completion of her studies.

“The Non-Traditional Student Award provides funding to non-traditional students seeking their first undergraduate degrees. Applicants must be aged 25 or older and pursuing full-time post-secondary studies, including online programmes at accredited institutions. This award is valued at up to $20,000 annually for overseas study for up to 4 years. Our 2023 recipients are:

  • 1. Jade Richardson, is currently pursuing her Bachelors in Pre-Medical Science at St. George’s University in Grenada. Jade plans to continue her studies as part of a six-year pathway that will lead to her Doctorate in Medicine. Jade is a Dean’s List student and has also achieved the Bronze and Silver level of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. She has also gained valuable experience through her work as a medical assistant at the North Shore Medical Center.
  • 2. Daniel Cabral, a graduate of Warwick Academy, is pursuing a Bachelor of Civil Engineering at Dalhousie University. He is a member of Dalhousie University Civil Engineering and Sustainable Society and acting Treasurer of the Dalhousie Chess Club. In 2018 he represented Bermuda internationally in the World Chess Olympiad.

“The Teacher Education Scholarships for current college or university students with sophomore standing for the study of selected subjects and/or areas of teaching need in the Bermuda Public School System. Scholarship value is up to $20,000 per year for overseas study for up to 3 years. Our 2023 recipients are:

  • 1. Michelle Samuels is pursuing her Masters in Special Education at the Liberty University in Virginia. Michelle has experience working in the Bermuda education system in a variety of roles at the CedarBridge Academy, most recently as a para-educator. She is passionate about pursuing her career in special education and working with students who have exceptionalities.
  • 2. Richard Trey Mallory is a former student of the Bermuda College, currently pursuing a Bachelors in Healthful Living and Fitness Education at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington in North Carolina. He is also an accomplished tennis player, having represented Bermuda in 12 Davis Cup matches, and has won four International Tennis Federation doubles championships. In 2022, Trey was the recipient of the Flora Duffy National Junior Athlete Award.

“The Minister’s Achievement Scholarship was designed to help graduating students of CedarBridge Academy and The Berkeley Institute attend overseas post-secondary education. This award is valued at up to $25,000 per year for up to 4 years for overseas study. The 2023 recipients are:

  • 1. Kriston Adams, a graduate of The Berkeley Institute, will pursue a Bachelor’s in Business Administration at Acadia University in Canada. During his tenure at The Berkeley Institute, Kriston was a dual enrolment student at the Bermuda College, where he was able to maintain high academic standing on the High Honours and the Principal Honours Lists. He has also served on The Berkeley Student Council and participated in the Raleigh International Program.
  • 2. Siniah Lambe, a graduate of the CedarBridge Academy, will pursue a Bachelor of Science with Honours at the Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, England. While at CedarBridge, Siniah maintained High Honours and Principal Honours and consistently demonstrated the attributes of a CedarBridge Academy student of excellence. Her leadership skills were evident as a participant in the community give-back to the Women’s Transformational Center. She is also a member of the Future Leaders of Bermuda and the Raleigh International Program in Bermuda.

“The Minister’s Exceptional Student Award is designed to help students with exceptionalities [disabilities] attend post-secondary education. This award is valued at $25,000 annually for up to 4 years of overseas study. Our 2023 recipient is:

  • 1. Christopher Hendrickson, will pursue a Bachelor of Health Science Degree in Kinesiology from Ontario Tech University. During his time at Warwick Academy, Christopher actively served as the Morgan House Leader. Christopher has persevered through many significant challenges and embodies all the characteristics of a student that this scholarship was designed to assist.

“The Minister’s Applied Science Scholarship is designed to help graduating dual enrolment students of CedarBridge Academy and The Berkeley Institute complete applied science and technology-related Associate Degrees and Certificates at Bermuda College. This award is for $5,000 and is tenable for one year. Our 2022 recipient is:

  • 1. Rhylee Edwards, is a graduate of the CedarBridge Academy and will pursue an Associate Degree in Science [Pre-Medical Science] at the Bermuda College this fall. Rhylee is committed to her passion of becoming a Rheumatologist. She is an active volunteer at the Salvation Army Thrift Shop.

“The Minister’s Technical and Vocational Award was designed to help promising public school students and public school alumni [aged 25 or under] at Bermuda College who have a strong interest in technical and vocational areas attend local or overseas post-secondary education. This award is valued at up to $25,000 annually for up to 4 years of overseas study and $5000 for local study. Our 2023 recipients are:

  • 1. Timothy “Amias” Lightbourne, is a graduate of The Berkeley Institute. Amias will be entering the Marine Systems Program at the Landing School in Maine as he aspires to become a Marine Engineer upon the completion of his studies. Amias has participated in the Turks & Caicos Island Voyage aboard the Spirit of Bermuda and the Endeavour Maritime Springboard Program. He also competed in track and field events during the 2020 Carifta Games.
  • 2. Christian Carreiro, is a graduate of The Berkeley Institute and a High Honours student. He is pursuing a Diploma in Hospitality Management from the Bermuda College. Christian is an active member of his church and other community programmes, and a regular volunteer for the SPCA. Christian is eager to become a tourism ambassador for Bermuda at the completion of his studies.

“The Minister’s Bermuda College Book Award is for Bermuda College students who require financial support to purchase books. These are one-time awards for students enrolled in degree programs at Bermuda College. They are valued at $500.

“The Further Education Award provides funding for college and university students who demonstrate financial need. This award is valued at $10,000; it is a one-time award that is tenable for 1 year. This year 38 undergraduate students received this award, and 10 postgraduate students were awarded as listed below:

      These young people have been awarded for their commitment. Unlike a certain political party that places you in a position as a surrogate for Charlie to control.
