Racehorse Flora Of Bermuda shed her maiden tag after winning the British EBF 40th Anniversary Alice Keppel Fillies’ Conditions Stakes at the Qatar Goodwood Festival in Chichester, West Sussex, today [August 2].

Ridden by Oisin Murphy, wearing the pink and navy-blue silks, Flora Of Bermuda went off at 5-1 in the five-furlong race in a field of 11 runners on soft ground.

The two-year-old filly displayed impressive acceleration, finishing ahead of Juniper Berries and Indispensable by four and three lengths, respectively.

Trainer Andrew Balding, based at Park House Stables near Newbury, Berkshire, told Sporting Life: “We think a lot of this filly, and it was a bit of a punt on the ground.

“We felt we’d learn something if it didn’t work, but she sluiced through it; she’s pretty talented.

“She’ll have no problems staying six [furlongs]; he [Murphy] couldn’t pull her up.”

Flora Of Bermuda, owned by Bermuda Racing, is the daughter of Dark Angel, a prolific sire who won four of his nine races as a two-year-old, including the St Leger Yearling Stakes, Mill Reed Stakes and the Middle Park Stakes.

Simon Scupham, chairman of Bermuda Racing, tweeted: “What a glorious win for Flora today. The racecourse may have been rain-soaked but Flora had her much-deserved day in the sun!”

Since forming a decade ago, Bermuda Racing has owned several Bermuda-themed horses, including Johnny Barnes, Queen Of Bermuda, Horseshoe Bay and Great Sound.
