The U.S. Consulate General launched a new student spotlight video featuring Bermudian Giovanni Hollis, who shares why studying in the United States was his top choice.

“I wanted the flexibility and freedom to choose my major,” says the ambitious student who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering with a double minor in health care systems operations and math at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. Giovanni has received several scholarships to support his undergraduate studies and advises on the many scholarship opportunities available here in Bermuda,

“Scholarships and funding are readily available here on island for Bermudians who want to study abroad in the U.S. and all you need to do is apply” he says. In 2022, he was awarded the $50,000 BFIS CG Insurance Alan Peacock Scholarship. He is also the recipient of scholarships awarded by Hamilton Parish, BELCO and the Bermuda Government.”

In the video, he also highlights why he chose to study at Northeastern University and states, “I decided on Northeastern being a hub for biotechnology and healthcare, in addition to the idea of the co-op which is a six-month work placement that you do throughout your degree.”

A spokesperson said, “Giovanni continues to broaden his U.S. college experience through this experiential learning program which provides opportunities to explore different career paths with work placement opportunities in the United States and in countries around the world.”

More international students choose to study in the U.S. than in any other country. U.S. Consul General Karen Grissette shared, “With over 4,500 accredited institutions of higher education, the United States has a college or university right for every student.” She added, “There is a range of affordable study options and scholarships that can be sourced in Bermuda or directly through U.S. institutions.”

The spokesperson said, “The video supports the Consulate’s ongoing Study With “US” campaign, highlighting Bermudian students currently attending U.S. colleges and universities, as well as Bermudian alumni of U.S institutions. The campaign reinforces the longstanding educational exchange ties between the United States and Bermuda and highlights accessible and affordable pathways to study in the United States.

“#StudyWithUS provides information on pathways to pursue higher education through EducationUSA, a U.S. Department of State network of over 430 international student advising centers in more than 175 countries and territories and online at EducationUSA.gov. The network promotes U.S. higher education to students around the world, offers information about opportunities to study at accredited postsecondary institutions in the United States, and provides services to students and their families focused on topics including the admissions process, standardized testing requirements and how to finance a U.S. education. The U.S. Consulate can provide information about the student visa process and preparing for departure to the United States.

“If you are a current student or alumni of a U.S. college or university and would like to participate in the campaign, please contact Public Diplomacy Assistant Camille Haley [HaleyCS@state.gov].
