Wage Commission Tribute To Martha Dismont
The Wage Commission paid tribute to the late Martha Dismont, calling “her a tireless worker for the ordinary person” and noting her “contributions in establishing Bermuda’s minimum wage.”
Wage Commission Chairman Cordell Riley said, “We, like many, were saddened to learn of Martha’s passing. As echoed by many, she was a tireless worker for the ordinary person, evidenced by her opening of the Family Centre, among numerous other contributions.
“In particular, I would like to note her contributions in establishing Bermuda’s minimum wage. In her three years of service, she was consistent in championing the cause of those who were less fortunate in society.
“In our many deliberations, she was adamant that the Commission, and by extension the Government, not introduce a minimum wage that we knew was below the estimated poverty line; at the time it was approximately $15.50. In June of this year, Martha was able to witness the introduction of Bermuda’s first ever minimum wage of $16.40.
“On behalf of the Wage Commission, I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to an individual who gave so much of herself to help others. We may indeed ponder why such a selfless individual seemingly had her own life cut short, but we can take comfort in knowing that her yeoman efforts have left Bermuda, and indeed the world, in a better place.
“Our sincerest condolences to her daughter Aruna, other family members and friends and, of course, to those continuing her work at the Family Centre.”
