Mitchell Enjoys Modeling At NY Fashion Week

Aspiring model Nalia Mitchell had the experience of a lifetime strutting down the catwalk at the recent New York Fashion Week Festival.
Mitchell was among a handful of Bermudians who successfully applied for the Model Experience, which allowed participants to walk the runway, connect with brands and designers, share the stage with A-List talent and benefit from virtual model coaching.
The 19-year-old had to send a no-make-up, no-filter selfie photograph along with her measurements to the organisers. She was also required to sell eight tickets for the show at the Amory Arena in Manhattan.
“I saw some posts going around [on social media] about the Model Experience and thought it would be a cool opportunity,” Ms Mitchell told Bernews.
“I applied and got accepted, but was unsure whether I’d go because of work commitments.
“My mom really encouraged me, helped me sell my allocated tickets and booked my plane ticket to New York.”
Mitchell, who attends Bermuda College and works as a private care nurse, took part in the 11 am show on September 9 and modelled clothes by Eden Created That.
“It was my first time in New York, and taking part in the show was an eye-opening experience,” said Mitchell, who has modelled at the Bermuda Fashion Festival.
“It was very different from all the other shows I’ve done in Bermuda.
“When your call-time came [to walk the runway], they lined you up in your order.
“I was very nervous. I hadn’t walked the runway in about three years; I loved it!
“I saw the people, the cameras, the lights, and did my thing. It played out exactly as I expected in my head.”
Mitchell, a former Berkeley Institute student, is hoping for further overseas modelling opportunities to come her way.
“It’s something I’d really like to pursue,” she added.
“A designer has already been in touch to ask whether I could do a show in New York next month. It’s exciting.”
