Footballer Mia Fishel opened the scoring for her team as the United States defeated Colombia 3-0 yesterday [Oct 29].

Fishel, whose father Patrick is Bermudian, is related to the Bascomes, the island’s famous football family, including former Bermuda players Andrew and David Bascome.

A story in The Athletic says, “The U.S. women’s national soccer team defeated Colombia 3-0 on Sunday at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego. Here’s what you need to know:

“U.S. forward Mia Fishel opened the scoring with a goal in the 56th minute. Captain Lindsey Horan added a score in the 62nd minute, and Jaedyn Shaw sealed the win with a goal in the 83rd minute. The U.S. took 20 shots compared to Colombia’s three, with seven shots on target for the U.S. against Colombia’s two.

“The USWNT’s next set of friendlies is against China in early December. The most exciting part of the USWNT’s second game against Colombia was the entrance of Fishel and Shaw as substitutes for Alex Morgan and Sophia Smith, and eventually the addition of Alyssa Thompson as a substitute for Trinity Rodman. Fishel is essentially auditioning as a 9 of the future for this team, while Shaw is similarly searching for a more permanent role perhaps as a winger, perhaps as an attacking midfielder.”
