Ministry: Join Public School Redesign Teams

November 1, 2023

The Ministry of Education said they “invite enthusiastic and committed education professionals, parents, and community members to participate in the School Transformation Teams.”

Head of the Education Reform Unit [ERU], Lisa DeSilva, said, “We are looking for enthusiastic and committed education professionals, parents and community members who want to be part of redesigning public education in Bermuda.”

Ms. DeSilva added, “The School Transformation teams have a significant role in redesigning Bermuda’s public schools to prepare young people for a purposeful and thriving future. These teams will be responsible for designing, prototyping, and implementing new models of teaching, learning, and schooling for various schools across the island.

‘The School Transformation Teams will participate in the redesign of the Devonshire Parish School opening on the Elliot Primary School site [opening 2025], Smiths Parish School opening on the Harrington Sound School site [opening 2025], continuing to transform Hamilton Parish School at the Francis Patton School site and continuing to transform Warwick Parish School at the Purvis Primary School.

“The transition teams for Parish primary schools will be engaged in co-designing the Blueprint Statements [overarching goals]; developing a plan for learning spaces to support 21st Century teaching and learning; continuing curriculum development for Yr. 2 and Yr. 8 and co-designing the unique features of the school in alignment with the community and students needs.

“Transition teams for senior schools will focus on developing Sandys Secondary Middle School as a new senior signature school for the Hospitality & Tourism and Education Services Signature Learning Programmes [SLPs]; continuing the work at the CedarBridge Academy STEM and Trades & Professions SLPs, including the addition of an Arts & Culture Strand; and continuing the work started at The Berkeley Institute’s Health & Social Care and Finance & Insurance Services SLPs including the addition of the new Sport and Leisure Management Strand.

“If you’re interested in being part of this initiative, complete the expression of interest forms at https://bit.ly/Non_Educator_EOI_2023 by November 10th, 2023 or email schoolredesign@moed.bm.

“The induction and onboarding session will take place in November 2023 and work on the School Transformation Team will continue until September 2025. The time commitment to the team will vary from week to week, month to month. If this sounds like you, then join a School Transformation Team and help shape Bermuda’s public education system.”

I am confused. I thought the Minister said that the PLP Government had a plan for education reform. Why would the PLP Government now be seeking “community members who want to be part of redesigning public education in Bermuda”?
