Paget Marsh Boardwalk Reopens To Public
The Bermuda National Trust [BNT] announced that the boardwalk at Paget Marsh Nature Reserve “has now been restored and is once again open to the public.”
A spokesperson said, “The 25-year-old boardwalk that extends 335 feet into the heart of the marsh had been closed for four years as it had fallen in disrepair. Wooden stringers, which sit on top of plastic floats and support the decking, were replaced with plastic lumber made from recycled bottles. Rotten decking was also replaced.
“The boardwalk serves several important functions in the nature reserve. It allows the public to enjoy a walk at the reserve and experience the various marsh habitats, which would otherwise be impossible due to the wet ground; it is an important space for experiential learning about Bermuda’s natural history for Bermuda’s school children; and it provides access for conservation maintenance such as the removal of invasive species. Interpretive signage provides for learning about Bermuda’s natural heritage.
“With a level path from the carpark to the boardwalk and a wheelchair-accessible entrance gate, Paget Marsh is the only fully wheelchair-friendly nature reserve in Bermuda.”
“BNT is hugely grateful to Aspen Bermuda Limited, the Conduit Foundation and the private donors who generously sponsored the restoration work,” said Karen Border, BNT Executive Director. “Their support recognizes the incredible value of this 20-acre nature reserve that acts as a green lung in the heart of Paget, offers people a glimpse back into pre-settlement Bermuda and is a stronghold of our native and endemic biodiversity.”
Adam Barboza, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility at Aspen Bermuda said: “Aspen is pleased to support the efforts of the Bermuda National Trust and is grateful for the dedication and hard work of their team and its contractors to get the Paget Marsh boardwalk operational again. We hope that it gives all its visitors the accessibility and opportunity to witness firsthand one of Bermuda’s true natural wonders.”
Stuart Quinlan, COO & Deputy CEO of Conduit Re, said: “Conduit are proud to support this important project which enables all members of our community to enjoy and learn about this unique nature reserve.”
The restoration was carried out by Brown and Company over several months starting in 2023.

All that money and could not replace the aged seats and railings?
This little island in the middle of nowhere is blessed to have an organisation like the Bermuda National Trust. Appreciation of our environment is indeed appreciated and some of our population should show more interest.
The new boardwalk looks very inviting. Bravo to all who made it happen. I look forward to being able to enjoy getting into and around the nature of the Paget Marsh.
Wonderful news and congratulations and thank you to everyone involved in the restoration.
