Swan’s Running Club Aiming To Be Eco-Friendly
In an eco-conscious initiative, Swan’s Running Club partnered with Keep Bermuda Beautiful [KBB] to develop “sustainability goals to help minimize the environmental impact of the club’s race events.”
Amin Smith, spokesperson for Swan’s, said, “Our race directors have been taking steps to reduce ‘race waste’ and make our events more eco-friendly. For example, we’ve switched to providing large water jugs where runners can refill their own reusable bottles to stay hydrated. If runners don’t have a refillable bottle, the club provides waxed paper cups instead of plastic. Swan’s also aims to minimize the amount of plastic products and packaging used during its races.”
Mr. Smith continued by saying, “KBB has been an inspiring environmental partner, providing education to our members, connecting the club with alternative resources to reduce waste, and assisting Swan’s efforts to become more sustainable. The club has supported KBB with part proceeds from two of its 2023 races which generated a $4,500 donation.”
Traci Burgess, KBB’s Executive Director added, “The Swan’s executive members, event directors, and race participants have been an enthusiastic and committed team to work with, and KBB looks forward to continuing our partnership. We applaud Swan’s for its desire to become more environmentally friendly and thank the club for its support of KBB’s mission to reduce waste, eliminate litter and keep the island beautiful.”
The spokesperson said, “The first Swan’s race of 2024 will be held on Sunday morning, February 11th, starting from Southampton Rangers Club at 8 am. This 8K walk and run is part of the Swan’s Legends Series of four annual races in honor of some of Bermuda’s forefathers of elite professional running. Swan’s hosts several other races throughout the year, all of which will move towards implementing the club’s sustainability goals.”
