CedarBridge Academy‘s Foreign Languages Department hosted a week-long event called “Embracing Diversity Through Languages” from March 18 to 22, 2024. Staff and students dressed up in clothing inspired by Spanish, Portuguese, and French cultures.
The week kicked off with a French twist on Monday. Ms. Antonette Chaplin, a Foreign Languages Teacher, led a recitation of the Lord’s Prayer in French, followed by interesting facts and phrases from the language. During lunch, a French film was shown, followed by a delightful cheese buffet and sparkling non-alcoholic wine that transported everyone to the heart of France.
Tuesday continued the linguistic exploration with Spanish activities and fun facts, which included a Spanish version of the Lord’s Prayer performed by S2 student, Damania Assing. The students were completely absorbed in the Spanish language, fostering a strong admiration for its culture. During lunch, students enjoyed playing various board games, grooving to the upbeat Spanish music, and eating nachos topped with salsa.
Wednesday was International Francophonie Day, celebrating French-speaking cultures worldwide. French prayers and facts were highlighted, with some students enjoying French breakfast treats. Lunchtime brought excitement with a thrilling scavenger hunt, igniting the spirit of adventure among participants.
Thursday brought a taste of Korea with a prayer and information session led by Foreign Languages Teacher, Ms. Lisa Eversley. Korean Pop music set the mood during lunch, infusing the atmosphere with energy and enthusiasm.
Kierra Trott, Maya Russel-Bean, Diora Blackstock, and Jada Smith showcased their language skills by flawlessly reciting the French prayer on Friday. During lunch, students enthusiastically shared their experiences from their recent educational trip to Panama with the school, creating a lively atmosphere. The culinary and cultural exhibitions, which highlighted Panama’s Spanish culture, were greatly appreciated by staff, visitors, and students alike. To keep the students engaged, a Foreign Languages trivia contest was organized, with rewards for the winners. The South courtyard was abuzz with energetic Salsa, Reggaeton music, and French Afrobeats, not to mention the Piñata party that had the students eagerly anticipating the sweet treats.
The Foreign Languages Department celebrated the beauty of linguistic diversity, fostering cultural appreciation and understanding among students. Cedarbridge Academy contributes to the development of a society that recognizes and respects the diversity of different cultures by embracing languages from all over the world.
