It has been exactly 29 years since Brian Wellman became the world indoor champion in the triple jump.

He claimed the gold medal at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Barcelona, Spain, in 1995 with a leap of 17.72 metres, which still stands as a Bermudian record.

Yoelvis Quesada, of Cuba, came second [17.62], and Serge Hélan, of France, placed third [17.06].

Wellman, who formed part of a formidable trio in the Nineties with high jumper Clarence “Nicky” Saunders and sprinter Troy Douglas, won a pair of golds at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Bridgetown, Barbados, in 1999 and Guatemala City, Guatemala, in 2000.

He also finished fifth at the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992.
