Over 100 Hats To Be Auctioned For Charity
“The late Cynthia Stovell, a trailblazing Bermuda nurse who died in December, in addition to leaving behind numerous family and friends, also left over 100 hats which will be auctioned for charity today [May 4th].
“Nurse Stovell loved hats, hats of all sizes and types and she paid much attention to their care. “Most of them are in hat boxes to maintain their shape and ensure their colours did not fade,” says her daughter-in-law Ruth Stovell. “They are in pristine condition, which is quite an undertaking in this Bermuda climate.”
“Mrs Stovell who headed Bermuda’s first clinic for sexually transmitted diseases and who worked tirelessly educating the public to help prevent and reduce transmission of these diseases, was passionate about caring for people’s health.
“Active in St Paul’s AME Church, she joined her friend Joan Simmons’ Mozambique charity Transforming Lives Fighting Poverty. To this end she spent much time in the east African country at the mission location assisting villagers with their health concerns.
“The people would walk for several hours, in some cases days, to see Cynthia and learn what they needed to do to help their physical healing,” says Mrs Simmons. “It was truly amazing to see. They loved her so much and really looked forward to her visits.”
“We felt that selling the hats and donating the proceeds to my mother-in-law’s much-loved charity, would be something she would want us to do,” says Mrs Stovell. “We encourage the public to come out and get a fancy hat, or a not so fancy one. In Bermuda one can always use shade from the sun or head warmth in the winter. There’s a hat for every occasion in this collection. And you’ll be supporting a great charity and honouring Cynthia’s memory.”
“The silent auction will take place on Saturday 4 May from 2-4:30pm at the home of Joan Simmons. Please RSVP at ruthiev1971@gmail.com or 331-3853.”
