Town Crier Ed Christopher Celebrates 30 Years
Earlier this month, the City of Hamilton honoured Ed Christopher in celebration of his 30th anniversary serving the City as its first and only Town Crier.
A spokesperson said, “Earlier this month, the City of Hamilton honoured Ed Christopher in celebration of his 30th anniversary serving the City as its first and only Town Crier. During the informal presentation to Ed, Mayor Gosling and City CEO Dwayne Caines shared words of congratulations and memories of their time with Ed.
“Special guest Mr. Milton Hill, Maritime History Model Boat Maker, attended as well, presenting two authentic cedar sculptures as a token of appreciation for Ed’s service as an ambassador and historian for both the City of Hamilton and Bermuda.”
Mayor Gosling said, “It’s my pleasure to recognize Ed Christopher for his 30 years of service. He is the voice of Hamilton; a man who can stand up on City Hall steps and, with one note of his voice, can silence an entire crowd. Ed has made us proud for more than 30 years and we thank him for all that he has done and all that he continues to do.”
Mr. Caines added, “Ed, you are a national treasure. If we were to identity ten prominent faces in Bermuda over the past 30 years, you would undoubtedly be on that list, and we commend you for your service to our community. I’ve had the privilege of taking your tour and when I did, I was amazed at what I didn’t know about places that I passed every single day. I see you as a Town Crier but also as a griot – someone who passes down stories and traditions through the generations. Hamilton is Bermuda at it’s best and you represent the best of our community.”
The spokesperson said, “Ed first played the role of Town Crier as a ‘one-off’ gig for the Queen’s visit in 1994. Since then, Ed, who is Certified Tourism Ambassador, has served as Town Crier for various City functions and occasions, including greeting arriving cruise ship passengers and delivering the City’s formal Proclamations. He has represented the City internationally at various Town Crier competitions.
“Every morning, Ed conducts daily tours of Hamilton for both visitors and locals and tailors each tour to suit the interests of the group.
“Over the years Ed has taken thousands of people on his now famous tours, immersing them in Bermudian culture and spreading the word about Bermuda and imparting his vast knowledge around the world.”
