Dr. Ty-Ron Douglas’ department and office recently co-hosted the Tommie Smith Youth Track Meet at Edwards Stadium on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley.

A spokesperson said, “The 19th annual Tommie Smith Youth Track Meet was an overwhelming success. Over 1200 registrants (from the Bay Area and across California) along with their enthusiastic family members and coaches converged on Edwards Stadium at the University of California, Berkeley.

“Morning rain delayed the start of day 1 on Saturday and caused the opening ceremonies to be moved to Sunday morning, but it did not inhibit the young athletes and event organizers from forging ahead in the rain with the track events and excellent performances. Day 2 on Sunday began with the opening ceremony and 200 Meter Lap of Honor [in recognition of Tommie Smith' s200 meter world record performance in the 1968 Olympics], with Dr. Tommie Smith and Delois Smith leading the procession, which included event sponsors and leaders of the 100 Black Men of the Bay Area Inc, Running Rebels Track Club, Cal Athletics Officials, and the young athletes and coaches.

“Dr. Smith addressed the robust crowd in the stands, many of whom were under colorful tents that would protect them from Sunday’s sun much like it protected them from Saturday’s rain. Lift Every Voice and Sing was sung, followed by the official pronouncement that the event was underway and an excellent day of track and field performances.

“It is truly a special atmosphere, with enthusiastic youth excited to meet Dr. Smith and perform their best in front of him and the cheering crowd.

“There is great anticipation for the 20th edition of this annual experience that brings together the best of the Bay Area and exemplifies Dr. Smith’s commitment to youth, education and uplift.”
