NMB Launches ‘Museum Memories’ Project
The National Museum of Bermuda [NMB] is celebrating 50 years as a museum this year, and as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations, they have launched a new community crowd-sourced project, “Museum Memories”.
A spokesperson said, “Through the project, the Museum aims to collect and share community memories of the historic Keep Fort through the ages: from being part of a working Dockyard to a derelict site, to becoming the Bermuda Maritime Museum and to today as the National Museum of Bermuda. Submissions can be photos with associated memories/stories or just a written memory.
NMB Registrar Jane Downing shared this photo when she was the Museum Curator in the 1990s, sharing [abbreviated]: “When this photo was taken I was the Curator at the Museum, working on collections, exhibitions, and publications. In the previous decade, alongside other staff members and volunteers, I had combined curatorial work with the other, practical work that was needed to physically rehabilitate and maintain the site: from cement mixing, demolition, and many trips to the Sally Port Dump, to cleaning, ticket office duties, and gardening…Today it gives me immense pleasure to be working in a fully-realised national museum—but every once in a while I miss the exhilaration of swinging a mattock or the satisfaction of toenailing a floorboard, and seeing the museum physically come to life in front of me.”
“Museum Memories joins other NMB community-based projects like “Bermuda Family Scrapbook”, all of which continue the Museum’s work of shifting how history is shared and taught on Island and adding new voices to the historic record.”
NMB Advancement Director Katie Bennett shared, “What’s your history with the Museum? Were you a volunteer, an intern, a visitor, a staff member? Did you visit with family and friends? We want to capture your memories and see your photos!”
The spokesperson said, “See recent submissions and submit yours at https://nmb.bm/memories/. The project will be live until the end of the year.”
NMB Executive Director Elena Strong shared, “NMB is home to Bermuda’s cultural past and our collective future, remaining strong thanks to a 50-year history of committed partners, generous donors and determined resolve. Thanks to a recent Campaign, we are entering a new era, building on strong foundations to shift how history is shared and taught in Bermuda. We continue to stay true to our mission: protecting, interpreting and sharing Bermuda’s history and heritage through our collections, exhibits, publications and programmes, and growing as a vital educational and cultural institution for everyone in Bermuda.”
The spokesperson said, “To learn more about the Museum’s five decades of education, preservation and research, visit their 50th anniversary webpage: https://nmb.bm/50-year-celebration/.”
