A spokesperson said, “Auto Solutions announced that it will be adding the all-electric Hyundai KONA to its lineup in late 2024, now possible due to recent legislative changes. On Friday, June 28th, the House of Assembly passed the Motor Car [Electric or Hybrid Private Motor Cars] Amendment Act 2024. This act allows for the importation of electric and hybrid vehicles up to 176 inches in length and 72 inches in width, an increase of one inch in both dimensions. The new class of vehicle, classified as I Class, will have a TCD licensing fee of $1,689.50. Auto Solutions is pleased to confirm Hyundai Motor Corporation [HMC] has granted Auto Solutions permission to import the Hyundai Kona EV 2025 into Bermuda for private use on our roads.

“The 2025 all-electric Hyundai KONA will be available at Auto Solutions starting in October-November 2024. This compact SUV, known for its modern design, advanced technology, and impressive range, is expected to be a popular choice among Bermuda’s drivers. Auto Solutions can also confirm they have submitted their first production order for twenty units, which further demonstrates their confidence in the very high volume of interest in this model from the local resident consumer.”

Will the owners pay more in taxes to upgrade the roads to handle the extra weight of this EV? Will these EVs be allowed in underground parking lots due to the fire hazard? Will these EVs be allowed in elevated parking lots due to the heavier weight of an EV??

Just remember that the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service does not have the training and equipment to put out an EV fire. Who pays for the training and equipment?

  2. Concerned says:

So that great news. However, why is it necessary for TCD to maximise their fee of $1689.50 for a licence. Thats crazy!!
Govt should be helping the consumer to encourage them to buy electric/hybrid motor cars.

With todays economy, thats way too much for a licence then add the sky high insurance rates, you could be looking at forking out 3k!!!

Thats serious corporate and Govt greed…

    • Hilarious! says:

Where will the money come from to rebuild our roads to handle the heavier weight of EVs? (see estimate below) Where will the money come from to train and properly equip the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service to handle EV fires? (no cost estimate to date)

Bermuda now has a fleet of 70 electric buses for public transportation running on roads not designed to handle the weight of an EV. Why is the Government going all in on EVs? Do we know how much damage to the roads is being done by the heavy electric buses? Follow the money.

All the primary roads will have to be repaved in the future to support the weight of all the electric cars the Government wants on the road. Using 140 miles of paved public roads, estimating 50% of main/major roads is 70 miles. Using $750,000 to $1,000,000 per mile TODAY comes out as $52.5 to $70 MILLION!

With inflation, when electric vehicles are mandated your children, grandchildren, and your grandchildren’s children will be sending their paychecks directly to Government. I suspect that at some point, most electric cars will be driven by our Ministers and Government employees – at taxpayer expense.

BTW – if EVs are so great, why is Mr. Big chauffered around in a gas-powered BMW?

Don’t waist your money on an EV!
