Eight Candy Stripers Earn Scholarships

Eight local candy stripers received scholarships totalling more than $20,000 when the Hospitals Auxiliary of Bermuda [HAB] held its annual awards ceremony on Wednesday 31 July.

“This year, we are proud to present 8 awards totalling $21,500.00” said HAB President Glen Gibbons. “I am so impressed with our young men and women and thank each of you for your service to this organisation.”

A spokesperson said, “Dr Merate Kristos-Place, a graduate of the HAB candy striper program and recipient of the HAB 50th Anniversary Medical Scholarship in 2004, was the guest speaker.

“Dr Kristos-Place attended the Royal College of Anaesthetists in the UK. Having completed her training and attaining her qualification, she returned to Bermuda in 2022 and joined Bermuda Hospitals Board as a consultant anaesthetist.

The recipients

“Aidan Medeiros – University of Western Ontario – Health Science – Kinesiology

Aidan was awarded the top amount for 2024. He has been a candy striper since 2021 and to date has completed 126 hours of service. Aidan’s ultimate plans is to pursue a medical degree. His interest in medicine peaked when cancer claimed his grandfather’s life.

“Chrishante Dill – Mount St. Vincent University – Psychology & French

“Chrishante has been a candy striper since 2019. She is currently our head candy striper having completed 154 ½ hours. Chrishante wants to be a clinical psychologist. She is a leader and has actively participated in extra-curricular activities outside of candy striping.

“Dominique Brown – Grambling State University – Mechanical Engineering

“Dominique has been a candy striper since 2021. She has completed 110 hours of service. Dominique was one of our Proficiency Awardees and plans to become a mechanical engineer. In addition to candy striping she is a member of the U20, U17 Bermuda women’s national football teams. Fascinated by the intricate workings of machines and the principles of physics, she is passionate about mechanical engineering.

“Ty’Esha Smith – University of Tampa – International Business and Management

“Ty’Esha has been a candy striper since 2021 and has completed 41 hours of service. She is pursuing degrees in International Business and Management, and Spanish. She was deputy head girl of the International Baccalaureate Program at Warwick Academy and a dancer with In Motion School of Dance.

“Jolie Davis – University of Manchester

“Jolie Davis has been a candy striper since 2021 and has completed 60 ½ hours of service. Her career goal is to become a psychiatrist. Jolie has a keen interest in mental health conditions, particularly schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. She was a school prefect where she led the Equality Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

“Vintage Thomas Lightbourne – University of Leicester

“Vintage has been a candy striper since 2021 and has completed 50 hours of service. She will be pursuing a degree in Business Management. Vintage was deputy head of students at Bermuda High School.

“Malaysia Johnson – Bermuda College – Associate of Science [Diagnostic Imaging Technology]

“Malaysia was accepted at Bermuda College in January 2024 having completed her high school education a year early. She graduated from Bermuda Institute in 2023. Malaysia has completed 189 ½ hours of service as a candy striper. She plans to continue in the program until December 2024.

“Naysaa Tucker – American Music & Dramatic Academy – Dance

“For the first time this year the HAB awarded a second year gift. Naysaa Tucker was the recipient. In 2022 she received a $2,5000 HAB scholarship. Naysaa continues her studies at the American Music & Dramatic Academy – with a second HAB award of $1,500.00.

Eligibility

“The HAB awards scholarships on an annual basis. Scholarships can be awarded to any candy striper current in the programme who has completed a minimum of two years. Previous awardees are now eligible to make an application for a second award. The awards may be used for continued studies in Bermuda or at an institution of higher learning abroad. Scholarships must be applied to the cost of education only, e.g. tuition, books and school fees.

“Interested in becoming a candy striper? There are currently 102 candy stripers enrolled in the HAB program. The HAB intakes approximately 40 students annually. Interested young men and women must apply in writing before their 14th birthday. Email applications can be obtained from jane.wright@bhb.bm”
