NMB To Host Artist Talks For BTA Art Month
The National Museum of Bermuda [NMB] is hosting three Artist Talks as part of the Bermuda Tourism Authority’s [BTA] Bermuda Art Month, which spans the month of October this year.
A spokesperson said, “On Thursday, October 3 at 10am, join Lisa Howie, Co-Curator of NMB’s Alternative Voices: A Perspective on Contemporary Art from the Azores to explore the vibrant contemporary art scene of the Azores. The exhibit features three Azorean artists who incorporate traces of the land and sea and elements of the earth into their visual compositions and sculptures. Howie will delve into the stories behind the artworks and the themes of renewal, nostalgia and rebirth. This exhibit is part of the Museum’s celebrations of the 175th commemoration of the first Portuguese immigrants to Bermuda and draws connections with NMB’s permanent Azores and Bermuda exhibit. Don’t miss this unique chance to engage with contemporary Azorean art and to [re]consider the cultural ties between these two archipelagos and our shared Atlantic identity.
“Jayde Gibbons will be on site at NMB for her Artist Talk on Saturday, October 5 at 11am. Gibbons will share her creative process for FAMILY [FAM, I Love You]. Through a collection of intimate and candid photographs, she explores the enduring power of family bonds in the face of profound sorrow and bereavement. Her photographs chronicle poignant moments from five local funerals and celebrations of life. Join to learn more about Gibbons’ work and how her photographs link to NMB’s Bermuda Family Scrapbook project.
“On Sunday, October 27 at 1pm, meet artist Graham Foster in his famous Hall of History mural that spans 1,000 feet of wall space in Commissioner’s House. Tracing the 500-year human history of Bermuda, this grand mural has captured the imagination of all ages, telling the island’s story with vibrant detail, irreverent humour and poignant observations. This is a rare opportunity to learn about Foster’s inspiration, technique, and the stories that breathe life into his art.”
NMB Executive Director Elena Strong shared: “We hope that visitors and locals alike join us for these opportunities to meet a few of our talented local artists whose work is on display at NMB. This is a rare opportunity to hear the artist’s and curator’s perspective, learn more about the exhibits’ context and have a conversation. Art is a powerful entry point to engage with Bermuda’s past and heritage. We look forward to seeing you at NMB!”
The spokesperson said, “The Artist Talks are free with admission to the Museum: $18/adults, $15/seniors and all NMB members and children under 16 are free. The Museum is open every day [except December 25] from 9:30am – 5pm [last admission 4pm].
