As part of its five-year anniversary celebration, the Government of Bermuda’s Brussels Office has added works by three Bermudian artists –  Graham Foster,  LuLu Hedstrom and Shanna Hollis — to their walls.

A Government spokesperson said, “This initiative was in collaboration with the Department of Culture who has been promoting the work of Bermudian artists in Government buildings. As the public may recall, this initiative was announced in the 2018 Throne Speech. Its goals are to showcase local talent and provide Bermudian creatives with a platform to share their work with the community, as well as to display artwork that captures Bermuda’s environment, culture and heritage.

“The three pieces displayed in the Brussels Office are, “A Bermuda Kettle of Fish” by Graham Foster, “Strelitzia” by LuLu Hedstrom and “Looka De Gombeys” by Shanna Hollis. These three artworks capture the spirit, culture and beauty of Bermuda, which can now be enjoyed by everyone that comes to visit the Brussels Office.

Ms. Aliyyah Ahad, Head of European Affairs and Policy in the Brussels Office said, “These pieces do an excellent job of capturing the colour, motifs, and vibrancy of the island. Bermuda has so many talented artists who deserve international recognition and I’m delighted that the Brussels Office can take this initial step in celebrating and showcasing some of this talent. I look forward to finding other avenues to share Bermuda’s culture and creativity in Brussels and around the EU.”

Dr. Kim Dismont-Robinson, Department of Culture Director said, “We’re grateful to the Brussels Office for providing this platform to highlight the talents of these three Bermudian artists.  Graham Foster, LuLu Hedstrom and Shanna Hollis are excellent artistic ambassadors, and we’re so pleased they agreed to share their work on this international stage.  This initiative also helps to advance one of the intentions behind the National Cultural Heritage Policy for Bermuda, ensuring that we embed aspects of our culture into everyday life.”

A Government spokesperson added, “As part of an extensive and comprehensive UK / Europe visit last month, the Premier and Minister of Finance, the Hon. David Burt, JP, MP, formally marked the Brussels Office’s five-year milestone with a reception, co-hosted with the Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers [ABIR] on the eve of its 17th International Insurance Regulatory Dialogue.

“During the observations, Ms. Ahad also held a “lunch and learn” in Bermuda in May 2024 with members of the Future Leaders Bermuda and Bermuda’s Youth Parliament, to raise awareness among Bermuda’s youth about the work of the Office and the island’s relationship with the European Union.

“As a reminder, the Brussels Office opened in 2019 to strengthen ties between the island and the European Union. It provides vital monitoring of EU policy developments with implications for Bermuda, such as those related to financial services and taxation, and builds relationships with key stakeholders in the EU and its Member States.”
