Video: Ministry Grants $25,000 To Eliza DoLittle
The Ministry of Youth, Social Development, and Seniors has granted $25,000 to The Eliza DoLittle Society, Minister Tinee Furbert said today [Nov 19], adding that “nearly 30% of residents in Bermuda face food insecurity, with 10% experiencing extreme deprivation.”
Speaking at a press conference today, Minister Furbert said, “I want to address an issue that speaks to the core of human dignity: recognizing the need for food security in Bermuda. The ability to provide nourishment for our families and ourselves is a cornerstone of well-being—a fundamental right that must not be out of reach for anyone in our community.
“First, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to The Eliza DoLittle Society and its Executive Director, Clare Mello-Robinson, for their tireless dedication to ensuring that no family or individual facing hardship is forgotten. Since 2002, their work goes beyond the distribution of food- it is about caring, compassion, restoring hope, fostering healing, organization and collaboration, promoting access to nutritious meals and creating a sense of belonging for those most in need.
“At present, nearly 30% of residents in Bermuda face food insecurity, with 10% experiencing extreme deprivation. These numbers highlight that hunger is not simply about empty stomachs—it profoundly impacts health, education, and opportunity, shaping the lives of our people in far-reaching ways. Today, I am pleased to announce that the Ministry of Youth, Social Development, and Seniors has granted $25,000 to The Eliza DoLittle Society.
“This is made possible through the mechanism of our grant application process and the Mid-Year Budget Review Social Investment Fund Allocation. This funding underscores our commitment to supporting organizations that make a meaningful and measurable difference in the lives of Bermudians.
“It is a call to action for all of us to ensure that no child, senior, or family goes without the means to nourish their bodies and minds. Over the past year, The Eliza DoLittle Society has served nearly 1,000 families, distributing more than 16,000 bags of groceries. These numbers tell a powerful story—neighbours helping neighbours, volunteers dedicating their time, and a community united in bridging the gap for those in need. Please take the time to learn more about the services that The Eliza DoLittle Society provides.
“Food pantries like those operated by TEDS and others are more than just resources; they are lifelines. By providing fresh produce, frozen meats, and other essential items, TEDS enables families to prepare nutritious meals that not only fill plates but also sustain health and vitality. The importance of food security extends well beyond individual households—it strengthens our society by promoting health, reducing inequality, and fostering social cohesion.
“The Ministry of Youth, Social Development, and Seniors remains steadfast in its commitment to this cause, recognizing its interconnectedness with the other services we provide, from homelessness, to support for seniors and youth programmes. As we confront the pressing issues of our time, let us remember that none of us truly flourishes unless we all do. Today, let us reaffirm our commitment to a Bermuda where everyone has not only enough to eat but also the resources and support to thrive.
“In closing, I would like to once again thank The Eliza DoLittle Society, Clare Mello-Robinson, and all those who work so tirelessly to uplift our community. Our church programs, our families, our non-profit sector, our people. On behalf of the Bermuda Government and the Ministry of Youth, Social Development, and Seniors, I say thank you.”
