Free Kwanzaa Celebration Set For December 8
A free Kwanzaa celebration will be held on Sunday, December 8 at the new Treehouse at 12 Trott Road in Hamilton.
A spokesperson said, “Come and join a free celebration of Kwanzaa this coming Sunday, December 8 at the new Treehouse on 12 Trott Road, Hamilton.
“Kwanzaa is a time for families and communities to come together to remember the past and to celebrate African culture. In Bermuda, we have a heritage of the African Diaspora/MAAFA, and therefore we celebrate Kwanzaa as an opportunity to celebrate ourselves and our history and imagine a better future.
“Created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Ron Karenga, Kwanzaa is a Pan-African holiday that celebrates history, values, family, community, and culture. The ideas and concepts of Kwanzaa are expressed in the Swahili language, one of the most widely spoken languages in Africa. Dr. Karenga, states ‘this is our duty: to know our past and honor it; to engage our present and improve it; and to imagine a whole new future and forge it in the most ethical, effective, and expansive ways.”
Tiffany Paynter, co-founder of Treehouse, said, “We’re excited to host the annual Kwanzaa celebration here at Treehouse. Rashida is really the engine behind the event and has done an incredible job organizing the vendors, the movie showing, food, and African drumming to top it all off. December 8 is going to be a great day at Treehouse, and we’d love to see some new and familiar faces in the space.”
Rashida Godwin, organizer of the Kwanzaa event, said, “As you can see on the flyer, there will be a host of activities that folks can participate and engage in, and they don’t have to be there for the full day, but we hope that folks would come and share in the experience and hopefully leave inspired and we are looking forward to having a good time and welcoming everyone.”
The spokesperson said, “The event will take place on Sunday, December 8 at Treehouse, 12 Trott Road, Hamilton, from 11:00am to 3:00pm. Donations welcomed for Treehouse.
