Prostate Cancer Study: A Milestone for Regional Health

The spokesperson said, “Prostate cancer remains a critical health challenge in the Caribbean, particularly for men of African descent, who are disproportionately affected. The region bears some of the highest prostate cancer incidence and mortality rates worldwide. In Jamaica, the incidence rate is approximately 304 per 100,000 men annually, while in Barbados, it is about 160 per 100,000. These numbers are starkly higher compared to many global averages, with Afro- Caribbean men facing an increased risk due to genetic predispositions, limited access to early detection, and healthcare inequalities.

“Despite these alarming statistics, the Caribbean remains underrepresented in global genomic databases, which are predominantly Eurocentric. Currently, over 85% of genetic data in major repositories is derived from individuals of European descent, creating a significant gap in understanding the unique genetic factors affecting Caribbean populations. This lack of representation hinders the development of effective, precision-based healthcare interventions tailored to the region’s needs.

“Addressing these gaps requires urgent efforts to collect and analyze genetic data from Caribbean populations. Initiatives such as the Caribbean Prostate Cancer Genetic Study spearheaded by CariGenetics Limited in partnership with GenTech Analytica and Laboratory Services and Consultations Limited are critical.
