Govt On St. David’s Lighthouse Restoration
The Ministry of Public Works and Environment is providing an update on the restoration of St. David’s Lighthouse, following the completion of the new telecommunications tower structure.
A Government spokesperson said, “The new tower represents an important step in the restoration process. Before work can begin on the Lighthouse itself, telecommunications equipment currently located there must be relocated to the new tower.
“Construction of the tower shelter and generator pad is underway, along with the installation of the necessary telecommunications equipment. All tower-related works are currently anticipated to be completed by December 2026, and the restoration works on the lighthouse is expected to begin shortly thereafter.”
Jaché Adams, Minister of Public Works and Environment, said, “St. David’s Lighthouse is important to the St. David’s community and to Bermuda more broadly, and people understandably want to see it restored and reopened.
“The completion of the new tower structure is an important step forward. It provides the infrastructure needed to relocate the equipment currently housed at the Lighthouse and allows us to move closer to beginning the restoration itself.”
The Government spokesperson said, “Once the relocation process is complete, technical officers will be able to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the Lighthouse. This will allow the Ministry to determine the full scope of restoration work required and develop a more informed project timeline.”
Minister Adams said, “There is still important technical work to be completed before we can establish the full extent of the restoration required. Once the Lighthouse has been cleared, our officers will be in a better position to fully assess the structure and determine the work that needs to be done.
“What is important is that this project is moving forward. The completion of the new tower structure represents tangible progress and clears the way for the next phase of work. We remain committed to restoring St. David’s Lighthouse and getting this important landmark reopened to the public.”
Island is becoming a dumping ground for this Government. 20q8 Lighthouse area was assessed, 2018 and now 2026 it has been decided to demolish the tower, which has become a monumental piece of our history as being the finish line for races from USA to Bermuda. Thousands would come to St. David’s to experience the boats crossing the “Line”, nights a navy frigate would be in place to light up the boats as they finished late evening until daylight. While under the tents in Mr. O’Connor’s backyard, huge white tents were erected, tables and chairs in place with white table cloths and cutlery waited for the officials to arrive and dine on the best cooking of St. David’s Island cooks. Wonderful atmosphere it was growing up in our Community during these times. Government kept the Lighthouse in pristine condition and Islanders made sure they did. Gibbs Hill gets so much more maintenance in thousands of dollars yearly. O suggest, you choose wisely who you serve in Bermuda’s Communities. Government allows buildings to become eyesore. Yesterday on Route 1 bus, I noticed at Government Quarry a number of vehicles parked on a field, if not cleaned up from vines and other, they will be completely hidden and remembered no more. Keep Bermuda Beautiful is a slogan, Government has to do a lot, lot better not on in St. David’s, but throughout Bermuda. My “X” is ready to be put in place.

Truth is a beach.
Those were different times. There was no GPS. There was no AISIS. The boats sailed over the horizon at Newport and then nothing was known until they came around North Rock.
St Davids was a big party atmosphere with families of boats waiting for hours, days, for their boats to come in. These days they know where their boats are at any time instantly. They can talk to their boats at any time on sat phones.
Virtually no one goes to St Davids to watch the boats cross the line. All is quiet except for the routine shift changes in the finish line tower.
Why do you have this thing about ruining everything.
