MakerSpace Initiative Sees Early Success
The Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sports highlighted the “early success of Bermuda’s first MakerSpace, which officially opened at CedarBridge Academy on 5 December 2023.”
A Government spokesperson said, “Since its launch, the facility has proven to be an invaluable resource for Bermuda’s creative community, offering a dedicated space for artistic development, collaboration, and innovation.”
“The MakerSpace, is a key initiative announced in the 2023 Throne Speech, and was created to support local creatives, including visual artists, musicians, dancers, and performers, by providing free access to professional-quality rehearsal and creative spaces,” explained the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports, Owen Darrell.
“The first phase of this initiative has already had a tangible impact, as demonstrated by organisations like TROIKA, who have utilised the facility for their rehearsals and creative process.”
A Government spokesperson added, “TROIKA Bermuda has particularly benefitted from the dance studio’s mirrored walls and open floor space, which enable full-scale choreography to be explored without restriction. The facility has also enhanced collaboration among performers, providing an environment where young creatives can exchange ideas, experiment with movement, and push artistic boundaries.”
Seldon Woolridge, founder of TROIKA, shared the significance of the space for their Young Choreographers Showcase. “The MakerSpace has been an essential resource in our preparation, providing a dedicated studio environment where our choreographers and dancers can develop, refine, and perfect their pieces. Having a reliable and well-suited space has allowed the creative team to focus on their craft without the usual logistical challenges of securing rehearsal venues.
“The MakerSpace removes financial barriers and makes arts creation more accessible. Typically, the cost of renting a dance studio on a consistent basis is very expensive, and to have access free of charge has been a game-changer. The Government has truly listened to the concerns of the arts community and has provided an invaluable resource.”
Minister Darrell expressed his satisfaction with the early success of the initiative. “This is more than just a space; it’s a commitment to Bermuda’s creative talent. Seeing the impact that the MakerSpace has already had on groups like TROIKA is proof of the potential it holds for our entire artistic community. This is only the beginning, and we look forward to expanding and enhancing this initiative to further support our creatives.”
A Government spokesperson added, “Local artists, performers, and creative groups are encouraged to take advantage of the MakerSpace facilities. The initiative continues to provide a vital platform for artistic expression, helping to nurture Bermuda’s vibrant arts and culture scene.
