Minister Praises Airport Authority’s Training
The Minister of Transport, Wayne Furbert met with a group of Bermuda Airport Authority aviation and weather staff to acknowledge their commitment to training and development.
Minister Furbert said, “I am quite pleased that training and development opportunities are available for talented young Bermudians at the Bermuda Airport Authority, and I appreciate the Airport Authority’s dedication to Bermudianisation.”
A spokesperson said, “The Minister was briefed on the Airport Authority’s recent hiring of four new Air Traffic Control [ATC] trainees who will soon embark on a journey to the United Kingdom for formal ATC Basic and Aerodrome Control Training. The intensive 15-week program is designed to equip the ATC trainees with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to commence an on-the-job training programme at the L.F. Wade International Airport on their return to the island.
“The newly hired Bermudian ATC trainees, Hannah Fletcher, X-onna Stevens, Dejon Robinson, and Nakiiah Robinson-Baker were selected from a competitive pool of local applicants. The training and development opportunity will mark a significant step in their careers, and it will contribute to the ongoing development and Bermudianisation of Bermuda’s next generation of air traffic control specialists.
“The Minister also acknowledged Duane Marques who recently commenced employment with the Airport Authority in its Air Traffic Engineering [ATE] section as a trainee technician. Initially Duane will receive training to become an ATE duty technician following which he will attend the US FAA’s training academy and system manufacturer programmes to become certified on some of the more complex air traffic management systems that are operated and maintained by the Airport Authority’s ATE section.
“Minister Furbert also congratulated recent certification achievements by Bermudians in the Bermuda Weather Service [BWS]. After completing two years of employment as a Meteorological Observer at BWS Lawrence Doughty attended meteorological forecaster training at the UK Met Office in 2023. Following several months of on-the-job training at BWS on his return to the island Lawrence attained certification as a Meteorological Forecaster in October 2024, helping to support safe and efficient aviation operations and to provide Bermuda’s daily weather forecast.
“In addition, new BWS employees Hayley Dill and Kashia Smith successfully completed on-island training during 2024 at BWS to attain Meteorological Observer certifications. Hourly observations are a regulatory requirement of aviation meteorology and also help support the weather forecasting for the LF Wade International Airport.”
Lester Nelson, CEO of the Bermuda Airport Authority said, “the Airport Authority’s investment in employee training and development underscores our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and service in air traffic management and weather services.”
