Support Single Mothers’ Meeting On Sunday
A public meeting on ‘A Call for Change and Support for Single Mothers in Bermuda’ will be held on Sunday [Feb 16].
A spokesperson said, “Join us on Sunday, February 16 at 6:00 PM at the New Christ Church of the Nazarene [#3 Collectors Hill, Smiths] for an important public meeting to address the challenges faced by single mothers and their children in Bermuda.
“This gathering is a powerful opportunity for single mothers, both past and present, their children, and those who support them to come together and spark meaningful conversations around the struggles that single mothers endure.
“The event will focus on the mental, physical, and financial challenges that single mothers face daily while calling on political leaders, community influencers, and both public and private sectors to take action. This is an opportunity for all to come together to break the cycle of multigenerational struggles and the harmful impacts they have on families and communities. Together, we aim to create a more supportive and unified Bermuda for all.
“The meeting is organized by Monique Stevens, a single mother of three boys who has shared her own personal journey of raising her children with minimal support from their father. Despite her best efforts, Monique found herself deeply in debt and facing eviction from the home she worked hard to maintain. Her story, shared in a powerful Facebook post, resonated with many, locally and internationally.
“It sparked not only public support but also criticism. Yet, it also prompted important conversations, including an invitation from Minister Tinee Furbert for a candid discussion on these issues.
“Minister Furbert highlighted the need for individual action alongside governmental support. Monique, empowered by this conversation, has taken the initiative to lead this public meeting, seeking to unite others who are facing similar struggles and to encourage change.
“This meeting will highlight the systemic issues affecting single-parent households, particularly those headed by single mothers. Attendees will hear firsthand accounts of the difficulties faced by single mothers, from the absence or neglect of fathers to the overwhelming financial and emotional burdens that come with raising children alone. While the event acknowledges the challenges faced by single fathers, the primary focus will be on the experiences of single mothers, with a call for both parents to share in the responsibility of raising their children.
“Monique’s own life story is a reflection of the broader cultural dysfunctions that contribute to the increase in fatherless homes, where children suffer from unmet basic needs and unaddressed emotional and psychological traumas. She has learned through her own journey that breaking generational cycles requires personal accountability and change.”
Ms. Stevens said, “This type of change is not easy at all, but it is extremely worth it.”
The spokesperson said, “Monique now advocates for a shift in perspective, encouraging others to step up and advocate for themselves, their families, and their communities.”
Ms. Stevens said, “I have invited local leaders such as the candidates for the upcoming election, community activists, and organizations such as The Family Centre, The Coalition for the Protection of Children, and others who are directly engaged in addressing these issues to attend, providing the public an opportunity to engage with those who will shape Bermuda’s future.”
The spokesperson said, “This event is a crucial moment for single mothers and families to be heard, to raise awareness, and to unite in support of the resources they need. The time for change is now, and Monique Stevens is leading the charge. If you wish to be part of this movement or have any questions, please email mommawhatchadoin3@gmail.com.
“Join us for this important event, and together, let’s work towards a more prosperous community.”
