Sophia Cannonier To Protest At Throne Speech
Sophia Cannonier will “hold a single-person protest” today [March 14] as Bermuda’s Parliament reconvenes for the Throne Speech.
A spokesperson said, “Sophia Cannonier, a community advocate and former political candidate, will hold a single-person protest on March 14, 2025, as Bermuda’s Parliament reconvenes at the Cabinet Grounds for the Progressive Labour Party [PLP] Government’s Throne Speech, delivered by Governor Andrew Murdock. This demonstration calls attention to unresolved societal trauma from the COVID-19 pandemic and urges unity in addressing its lingering effects.
“The protest takes place against a backdrop of growing public concern about community well-being. On March 7, Bermuda marked its first “Grief and Loss Awareness Day” at City Hall, spotlighting the collective need for healing after years of social and economic upheaval. Additionally, Dr. Stanley James’ ongoing “State of the Nation” seminar series emphasizes themes of “healing, wholeness, and hope,” underscoring a broader societal reckoning with post-pandemic challenges.
“Cannonier’s advocacy has gained momentum following her appeal against the government’s use of emergency powers during the pandemic and her political campaign in the February 18 General Election. Her platform has consistently called for accountability in public health policies and systemic reform to address inequities exacerbated by the pandemic.
