Minister of Tourism, Transport, Culture and Sport Owen Darrell held a press conference this afternoon [April 23] to provide an update on a new trial bus route in the East End.

Minister Darrell’s remarks:

Good morning everyone,

Thank you for being here today as we continue our work to create a more accessible, reliable and inclusive public transportation system for all residents.

I am pleased to provide an update on a new trial bus route that is currently in operation. This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to responding to the transportation needs of the community.

At present, a trial is being conducted on Route 6 St. David’s schedule during weekdays, and this will continue through to May 30th. The purpose is to enhance mobility for residents of Cut Road, St. George’s, particularly our senior citizens who rely on public transport but often find it difficult to walk long distances to reach the nearest bus stops.

Under the current trial, the 10:10 am departure on Route 6 from St. David’s to St. George’s will now travel via Cut Road to Gates Fort. It will turn around at Gates Fort before travelling to and terminating at the St. George’s Bus Depot. The bus will enter Cut Road at approximately 10:30 am and is expected to depart Gates Fort at around 10:35 am. From there, it will proceed directly to the depot.

We do advise passengers who wish to continue their journey beyond the St. George’s depot that they will need to transfer to the next bus departing from the depot. This adjustment, though small in terms of timing, represents a meaningful improvement for those living along Cut Road, especially seniors who have expressed how challenging it can be to access current routes.

This trial forms part of a broader effort to improve public transport across the island. Our investment in seventy electric buses has been a significant step forward, helping to modernise our fleet while also supporting environmental goals. Additionally, the introduction of the Shorelink App has made it easier for passengers to plan and pay for their journeys.

Lastly, I would like to kindly remind all residents to refrain from parking along Cut Road, and in the bus turnaround area at Gates Fort, as parked vehicles may obstruct the bus and create safety concerns for both passengers and drivers. Your cooperation is essential to the success of this service.

We will continue to monitor the trial and welcome feedback from the public as we assess its effectiveness. Thank you for your continued support as we strive to build a better, more connected Bermuda.

Thank you.

  1. puzzled. says:

Hell they might as well walk to the bus depot.

  2. Hey says:

So the fanfare is for an existing bus run that has just been extended a little bit. Meanwhile 8 bus runs were cancelled yesterday.

Why is this headline news, how pathetic have we Bermudians become

    • Joe Bloggs says:

      “Why is this headline news”

Because any exposure is better than no exposure.

You cannot expect the Government to simply get on with the work of Government without telling everyone every little thing they have done and seeking congratulations!

  3. Hilarious says:

Seriously? Anything for a photo op! Where were the press conferences when routes were being cancelled for undisclosed reasons?

Ministry: 8 Bus Runs Cancelled On Thursday
Ministry: 3 Bus Runs Cancelled On Tuesday
Ministry: 3 Bus Runs Cancelled On Thursday
Ministry: 2 Bus Runs Cancelled On Wednesday
    >>> Ministry: 15 Bus Runs Cancelled On Friday <<<
    and on and on….

  4. Steve says:

Because the PLP don’t care about the bus cancellations or anything else that the public has to put up with. The state of the roads etc

    • Joe says:

They care but it obvious that the voters don’t care about the obaUBP. Time to change the name again.

    • Joe Bloggs says:

There you go, Steve. The PLP Government cares enough to send a troll to say the PLP Government cares and to spread misinformation.

      • Joe says:

When are you picking another obaUBP leader? Do it after the next election loss.
