The Ministry of Public Works and Environment participated in CedarBridge Academy’s annual Vocational Career Fair last week, held under the theme “From Passion to Profession.”

A Government spokesperson said, “This initiative aimed to support students in exploring career aspirations and assessing their life-planning skills through direct engagement with industry professionals.

“In support of this vision, the Department of Employee and Organisational Development extended the invitation across Ministries, encouraging representatives to connect with students, spark interest in public service careers, and promote roles that are traditionally harder to fill.

“In response to the invitation, the Ministry of Public Works and Environment assembled a booth team representing diverse disciplines including Estates, Engineering, Architecture and Crafts/Trades with a focus on Highways and Water and Sewage Engineering.

“The Ministry’s key objectives were to:

  • Build and strengthen student-professional relationships
  • Provide students w/ experiential activities
  • Motivate and incite students to build a career w/ the Ministry
  • Enhance Corporate Social Responsibility skills
  • Foster meaningful career connections

“To meet these objectives, the booth featured interactive demonstrations simulating a typical day in various professions. These included activities related to water treatment plant operations, traffic management planning, infrastructure development, estates, and the built environment.”

Minister of Public Works and Environment Jache Adams, who attended the fair to show his support, shared:
”It’s incredibly important that our young people see the vast opportunities available within public service. Events like this give students real insight into meaningful careers that directly contribute to the quality of life in Bermuda.”

He added, “Public works may not always be front of mind for students, but when they learn about engineering, water management, infrastructure design and all the skilled trades involved, you can see the light bulbs go on. That’s the magic of hands-on exposure.”

A Government spokesperson added, “Students enjoyed engaging presentations, simulation exercises, and a range of experiential activities. A highlight of the booth was a fun photo opportunity with “Mr. Drippy,” the Water and Sewage section’s beloved water conservation mascot. Exciting giveaways added to the lively atmosphere and student engagement.

“Booth representatives noted a strong and genuine interest from students, who asked insightful questions about engineering and trade professions, as well as internship and career opportunities. The Department of Employee and Organisational Development was also present to provide guidance on scholarships, bursaries, and internship pathways.

“Overall, the event was a tremendous success and a valuable opportunity for the Ministry to invest in Bermuda’s future workforce. By showcasing real-world applications of public sector careers, the Ministry continues its commitment to empowering the next generation through education, inspiration, and opportunity.”
