Sean Trott On Bermuda Day Half-Marathon
[Written by Stephen Wright]
Sean Trott hopes his new training approach will help him surpass last year’s third-place finish in the Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby.
A perennial contender and four-time runner-up, Trott said he has made a strategic shift this season – racing less and training smarter.
Instead of competing in local events, he has concentrated on quality preparation ahead of the 13.1-mile race, which starts in St George’s.
“I’m definitely in a good space this year,” Trott told Bernews.
“I’ve backed away from racing locally this year, focusing on my training, which has worked very well.
“Usually, when you’re racing, you back off during the week of the race, so you lose out on quality training.
“I’ve been able to put in more uninterrupted work.”
With elite runners such as defending champion Lamont Marshall, Ryan Outerbridge and Trey Simons in the field, Trott knows the path to victory will not be easy.
“It’s good to know who will be on the line with you,” said Trott, who ran a personal best of 1hr 12min 56sec in 2011.
“You’re running your own race, but if you get left behind by the pack, you won’t be as effective.”
For Trott, success is not just about conditioning – it is about mindset.
“Most of it is more mental than physical,” he said. “If your mentality is engaged, you’ll be physically engaged as well.
“I have a race plan, and I’m ready to execute it.”
Beyond his Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby ambitions, Trott is also preparing to represent Bermuda at the International Island Games in Orkney, an archipelago off the north coast of Scotland, in July.
Still, it is the race on Friday [May 23] that holds a special place for him.
“I look forward to this time of year the most – people have been wishing me well in texts and on the street,” he added.
“This event unites Bermuda. It’s something to soak in.”
