Demiqua Daniels On Passion For Netball
[Written by Stephen Wright]
Demiqua Daniels rarely takes a break from netball – and she would not have it any other way.
Her unwavering commitment to the sport was recently rewarded in the best possible fashion as she helped the Lindo’s Tigers secure the Bermuda Netball Association Winter League title, capping off a perfect, undefeated season.
She was named the MVP in her side’s 39-30 win over second-place Storm to clinch the crown.
Fresh off that championship high, the 26-year-old is not slowing down.
She has now shifted her focus to the Summer League, where she is representing the Bermuda Hospitals Board co-ed team and the Devonshire Recreation Club women’s side.
“Netball’s an all-year-round thing for me,” Daniels told Bernews. “It never stops!”
And her passion shows. Daniels has built an impressive résumé since she started playing netball at age seven while attending Prospect Primary School.
Her natural talent was quickly apparent, eventually earning her spots on Bermuda’s Under-16 and Under-21 national teams – experiences that gave her a solid foundation and international exposure early on.
Under the mentorship of esteemed coach Erica Russell through the Storm youth programme [then called the Lady Bluebirds], Daniels developed into a disciplined and adaptable player.
She later joined the Lindo’s Tigers, where she has been a mainstay for the past eight years.
This season marked a turning point, as Lindo’s ended Storm’s long-standing dominance to clinch their first league title.
“This season has been an amazing experience,” Daniels said. “We’ve had our ups and downs but came together as a team.
“Winning the title was awesome. We’ve been working toward this for years. We stuck to our goals, kept our heads high, and took it one game at a time – one pass at a time.”
Primarily playing at wing defence, Daniels prides herself on her versatility and enjoys the camaraderie within the netball community.
“I fell in love with the sport and never let go,” she said. “My kids come to watch me play, and there’s a real family environment around netball. That’s what makes it so special.”
