Brownies And Rainbows Hold Coastal Cleanup
Two Brownie units and Rainbows kicked off a year of environmental stewardship with a coastal cleanup near Bailey’s Bay.
A spokesperson said, “A recent coastal cleanup provided a perfect start to a year of conservation and environmental stewardship for Brownies and Rainbows from two units.
“Two Brownie units joined forces to commence a year of conservation and environmental stewardship.
“First Devonshire/First Smiths Brownies and Rainbows and volunteers from Somersfield Academy Brownies spent a Sunday afternoon cleaning up a rocky coastal area near Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club in Hamilton Parish. The girls ranged in age from 4 to 10 years old. They were joined by Head Aquarist Tricia Pitcher and her family, as well as parents and environmentalists from the Rainbows and Brownies groups. One student from Warwick Academy came as a part of her community service.
“After participating in an interactive discussion about pollutants, the children set off in groups led by adults.
“They collected over 600 microplastics along the shoreline, rope, fishing line, sponges, soles of shoes and other pollutants.
“One parent recorded what was found. Data was shared and hand-delivered to the KBB office.
“The two Brownie leaders who organized the cleanup were Brown Owl Cathy Bassett of First Devonshire/First Smiths Brownies and Rainbows and Brown Owl Ashley Phipps of Somersfield Academy Brownies.
“Both leaders will be working together on future projects about environmental conservation and stewardship throughout the year.”
