World Sailing Opens LA28 Olympic bids
World Sailing has launched the process to select hosts for the Continental Olympic Qualifiers for the Los Angeles 2028 Games, as well as the Last Chance Regatta, the final opportunity for sailors to secure Olympic qualification.
Candidacies are also being invited for the 2027, 2028 and 2029 Youth Match Racing World Championships, along with the Women’s Match Racing World Championship, which follows the same three-year cycle.
World Sailing said formal bid guidelines and technical requirements are now available online.
“These events play a critical role in the global sailing calendar and the Olympic pathway,” the governing body said.
Ireland is playing its part in the LA28 quadrennial, with the 2026 ILCA World Championships scheduled to be staged at Dún Laoghaire Harbour.
The LA28 Olympic Games sailing competition will take place from July 16 to 28, 2028, across two venues in Southern California. Board events will be held at Belmont Shore, while boat-based competitions will take place at the Port of Los Angeles.
The sailing programme begins with men’s and women’s kite events on July 19, followed by windsurfing on July 20.
Dinghy racing will open the boat competitions, followed by mixed multihull and dinghy events, with men’s and women’s skiff racing concluding the programme on July 28.
The events are structured to ensure gender equality in both athlete numbers and competition opportunities.
The LA28 Olympic Games run from July 14 to 30, 2028.
