Acting Major Jeffrey Patterson Earns PSEA

Acting Major Jeffrey Patterson of the Royal Bermuda Regiment Coast Guard Unit earned the Public Service Excellence Award [PSEA] for December.

A Government spokesperson said, “The Government of Bermuda is pleased to announce Acting Major Jeffrey Patterson of the Royal Bermuda Regiment Coast Guard Unit as the December recipient of the Public Service Excellence Award.

“In the past six months, A/Maj Patterson has led the Coast Guard through a period of innovation and operational excellence, ensuring 24/7 maritime coverage and strengthening Bermuda’s search and rescue capabilities. Under his leadership, the unit has actioned 98 search and rescue missions and supported multiple law enforcement and regulatory operations across the island.

“A/Maj Patterson also delivered two major capability advancements without drawing on public funds, by securing international grant funding to establish the Regiment’s first Unmanned Systems Unit [USU] and procure an underwater remotely operated vehicle [ROV].

“The drone unit, staffed by FAA-certified operators from across the Regiment, is equipped with infrared technology to enhance shoreline searches and emergency response. The ROV will enable critical underwater search and recovery operations, including work in hazardous environments such as ship hull inspections and deepwater recovery. Together, these innovations significantly strengthen Bermuda’s maritime readiness.

“Beyond operations, A/Maj Patterson continues to build national capacity by teaching maritime navigation and skills at Bermuda College, helping hundreds of residents qualify for professional certification.”

Premier David Burt said, “I congratulate Acting Major Jeffrey Patterson of the Royal Bermuda Regiment Coast Guard Unit on receiving the December Public Service Excellence Award. The Coast Guard was a major initiative of this Government, transforming the Regiment from a primarily land based operation into a strong and capable maritime unit. Acting Major Patterson is being recognised for implementing technology that strengthens Bermuda’s ability to intercept illegal contraband before it reaches our shores.”

Minister of National Security Michael Weeks said, “I commend Acting Major Patterson for his outstanding contribution to Bermuda’s maritime safety and security. His leadership has enhanced the Coast Guard’s operational capability, strengthened search and rescue response, and improved support to partner agencies. These advancements help ensure safer waters for all who live, work, and travel in and around Bermuda.”
