PLP To Honour Four Bermudians With Awards
The Bermuda Progressive Labour Party will celebrate its Founders’ Day this Sunday at CedarBridge Academy, honouring Mickey Robinson, Norette Simmons, Barbara Dillas [Bassett], and Cecille Snaith-Simmons for their decades of service in business, community, education, culture, and heritage, with a keynote address by Minister Jason Hayward.
A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Progressive Labour Party will honour four outstanding Bermudians whose lifelong service reflects the values at the heart of the Party’s founding, as part of its annual Founders’ Day Celebration this Sunday, February 22, at CedarBridge Academy Cafeteria. This year’s program will feature a keynote address by the Hon. Jason Hayward, JP, MP, Minister of Economy and Labour.
“Founders’ Day marks not only the history of the Progressive Labour Party, but the generations of Bermudians whose commitment to community, fairness, and opportunity continues to move the country forward. The Drum Major Awards recognise individuals whose work has strengthened Bermuda through service, leadership, and dedication to others.
“The 2026 Drum Major Award recipients are:
“Mickey Robinson – A Bermudian businessman for more than 30 years, Mr. Robinson has consistently used entrepreneurship to support the community. During Bermuda’s recovery from COVID-19, he organised initiatives that created opportunities for Black-owned restaurants and entertainers during a difficult economic period. He continues to provide sponsorship and practical support to numerous community organisations.
“Norette Simmons – For over three decades, Ms. Simmons has demonstrated unwavering grassroots service in Sandys Parish and beyond. She has led the organisation of island-wide food hamper initiatives, ensuring families in need receive essential assistance. Her steady leadership and compassion have made a lasting impact on countless Bermudian households.
“Ms. Barbara Dillas [Bassett] – A respected Bermudian artist, mentor, and educator, Ms. Dillas devoted more than 30 years to teaching art in Bermuda’s public school system, inspiring generations of young Bermudians. She also taught inmates at the former Casemates Prison, using art to encourage growth and rehabilitation. Today, she continues mentoring emerging artists and contributing to Bermuda’s cultural life.
“Mrs. Cecille Snaith-Simmons – Recognised for decades of national service in heritage preservation, social advocacy, and community leadership, Mrs. Snaith-Simmons is a Queen’s Certificate and Badge of Honour recipient, author, historian, and activist whose work has helped preserve Black Bermudian history.
“For more than seven years, Terry Ann Smith has served the Progressive Labour Party with unwavering dedication as Chairwoman of the Events Committee. As one the Party’s unsung heroes, she has played a major role in shaping the success of the events we use to stay connected with our Members and our community. Working diligently behind the scenes, she has poured her heart, time, and energy into ensuring that every event reflects the pride, strength, and unity of our Party.”
Progressive Labour Party Chairman Dawn Simmons said “Founders’ Day reminds us that Bermuda’s progress has always depended on people who step forward to serve. This year’s Drum Major recipients through their work across business, community service, education, culture, and history have strengthened our country and touched countless lives. By honouring them, we celebrate not only their contributions, but the enduring belief that Bermuda works best when we lift each other up.”
A spokesperson added, “Sunday’s Founders’ Day Celebration at CedarBridge Academy will bring together Party members, supporters, and the wider community to honour these exceptional Bermudians and reflect on the legacy and future of the Bermuda Progressive Labour Party.”
