The Government of Bermuda is urging heightened vigilance online following a rise in AI-generated scams using the likeness of officials such as Premier David Burt.

A Government spokesperson said, “The Government of Bermuda is once again reminding the public to be vigilant while on social media platforms, as there has been an increase in fake AI-generated accounts and posts that are being used to mislead the public and potentially defraud unsuspecting individuals.

“Often, such social media posts or direct messages use the likenesses of local public figures and/or organizations to make their offerings appear more legitimate.”

A Cabinet Office spokesperson reminded, “We are seeing an increase of videos using the likeness of Premier David Burt and other Government officials. With the rise of artificial intelligence, fake videos, false representations, and messages are becoming more common. Unfortunately, individuals have been scammed in the past, and we urge all residents to exercise caution and remain vigilant when using the internet.

“If anyone receives the referenced fake AI post, they should report it directly on the platform or to the Bermuda Police Service. As a reminder, no government official will ever use social media to promote an investment. The public is once again encouraged to only rely on official information and official advisories from the Government of Bermuda.”
