Labour Dept Releases Workplace Rights Guide
The Department of Labour has released its ‘Know Your Rights at Work’ guidance document, an “accessible, easy-to-understand resource designed to help employees better understand their workplace rights.”
A Government spokesperson said, “This initiative comes at an important time, following recent amendments to Bermuda’s Employment and Labour Code, which have strengthened protections and improved alignment with international labour standards. The Code includes the Employment Act 2000 and the Trade Union and Labour Relations [Consolidation] Act 2021 and establishes minimum standards of employment and protections for workers across Bermuda.
“To support greater public awareness, the Department has developed this guidance in a practical, user-friendly format. The document is structured in short, easy-to-read sections, allowing employees to quickly reference key information when needed. It is also designed to be printed and carried, ensuring individuals have convenient access to reliable information about their workplace rights.”
Minister of Economy and Labour Jason Hayward explained, “Every worker in Bermuda deserves to clearly understand their rights and protections in the workplace. This guidance document is about empowering individuals with practical, accessible information so they can navigate their employment with confidence. At the same time, it supports employers by promoting clarity, fairness and a shared understanding of responsibilities across our labour market.”
The spokesperson said, “The guidance covers a range of fundamental employment rights, including pay and wage protection, hours of work, breaks and overtime, leave entitlements, probation and termination, and employment contracts. By presenting these topics clearly and concisely, the Department aims to empower employees to better understand and assert their rights.
“The Department of Labour emphasises that awareness of employment rights is essential for both employees and employers. A clear understanding of employment rights and obligations can help prevent disputes, support early resolution, and contribute to a more stable, productive, and fair working environment.
“This publication forms part of the Ministry of Economy and Labour’s broader efforts to ensure that all participants in Bermuda’s labour market are equipped with the tools and information needed to navigate the evolving Employment and Labour Code.
“The ‘Know Your Rights at Work’ guidance document is available online in the resources section at gov.bm/department/labour and from the Department of Labour’s offices located at Sophia House, 48 Church Street, Hamilton.”
