Dr. Kuni Frith hosted a celebration at her Herbgoddess Teas store on Sunday evening, marking her 20th year in business.
Dr. Frith told Bernews, “Looking back at my journey in Complementary and Alternative Medicine during the early years of establishing my career in naturopathy, I knew I would need to set myself up with an herbal apothecary. I had already built a client base from my certifications in auricular acupuncture, clinical hypnotherapy and as a wellness coach. Many of my clients at the time were using prescription drugs to address chronic health conditions.
“I opened Herbgoddess Teas in 2006 in the basement of my home. I started out small and over time added to my repertoire of herbs and botanical supplements. At the time I was pursuing my degree in naturopathic medicine. With the increased knowledge I acquired studying herbal medicine, I became better equipped to advise my clients on how to stabilise or reverse their health imbalances.
“I expanded my inventory of herbs while building a reputation for myself along the way. Word of mouth is the best advertising in a small community like Bermuda. Satisfied clients would share their stories of healing with others in their circle and the referrals kept coming in. I wrote my first book in 2013 entitled Bermudian Folk Remedies. During that time, I also seized the opportunity to establish a pop-up space in the Washington Mall prior to and during the Christmas holiday to sell my books and herbal teas.
“Once the holiday season was over, I packed up and returned to my business in the basement of my home. Shortly thereafter, I received a phone call from the office of Washington Properties asking if I would be interested in renting a kiosk in the mall full time. The contact person informed me that folks were enquiring about how to get in contact with me to purchase my book and to buy more teas. I accepted the offer to setup full time in the mall and my business grew immediately.
“In 2015 a senior staff member offered me the opportunity to occupy a retail space in the mall two doors down from my kiosk and the rest is history. I have been in the mall for the past thirteen years. I am most grateful for the continued support from the community and the many opportunities provided for me to grow my business. The road to success has not been an easy one. Life has thrown many challenges and obstacles along my path, I have had to strategise and figure out the best way to move forward through difficult times.
“I never expected to be in business twenty years later. To be honest, I really didn’t have any expectations other than to show up for work every day and offer help to those in need of establishing healthy lifestyles. I am just as surprised as many folks that I managed to stay in business this long. I’ll just say that if you love what you do it’s not considered work. I am enjoying an incredible journey into the world of knowledge surrounding medicinal plants and their healing abilities.
“I credit my faith in God along with daily prayer for seeing me through and shinning a light at the end of some very dark tunnels. This mindset has allowed me to continue operating my business and helping those in need in our community. When I wake up in the morning, I am motived by my passion, unconditional love, and relentless drive for my work in opening the doors to Herbgoddess Teas daily. It is not just a job or a way to make money. It is a commitment to the people of this country and a way to offer those people options to health issues that appear insurmountable.”
“My accomplishments would not be possible without the many people who believe in me and have supported me in so many ways over the years. The community have rewarded me for my hard work and dedication over the last twenty years. I am most thankful and honoured to be able to serve them by offering suggestions and sometimes solutions to their health issues. I have an insatiable appetite for knowledge and view continuing education in my field as a necessary tool to improving my practice.
“I don’t have to search for or wonder about my purpose in life. God has made that mission very clear to me and provided a way for me to educate folks on the importance of maintaining healthy lifestyles. As I celebrate twenty years of being in business, I cannot imagine what my life would have been like without all the adventures, experiences both good and challenging and the continued inspiration of giving service to people in the community.
“A heartfelt thank you goes out to every individual, group, organization and Government Department who has played a role in molding me and my career to improve the lives of so many. A special thank you goes out to my daughter Alexis along with family and friends who have stood beside me through challenges and victories. May God bless you all and grant you good health, peace of mind and prosperity.”
